What did your old rear hubs/bearings look like when removed?
I changed mine out and expected to see sloppy, loose bearings. Instead, they felt just like the new ones. They were squalling and growling so I know they were bad. The free play was also greatly reduced useing the 12-6 o'clock test.

Mine "seemed" fine, but it was howling and the car was dancing alll over the road. I think the amount of movement actually AT the bearing is very minimal, but gets worse linearly the closer to the edge of the tire.

Mine looked fine too, just a little dirty and a bit of grease leaking from the back seal of the hub.
These hubs can sometimes be difficult to tell by looking at them if they are bad.Its more by sound and freeplay when its on the car then once its off.
However,as with any car parts, its wise to replace high mileage parts with new ones for safety maint. at times.

Keep in mind when you do the 12-6 test with the bearing on the car, you are applying 4-5 times as much torque, because your hands are on the tire, as opposed to just the bearing. So it's no surprise you can't feel play on a bearing when it's in your hands.
