Default Torque Converter..

What is the stock converter lockup for an 89 vette with 3.07 gears, if that matters? Thanks all, sorry for the short question. The women wants to spend time together. OH NO! :D

Do you mean "what is the stall speed" ?

My stock 89 convertor stalled at about 1300 rpms.

I did manage about a 1.90 60' time with it.

Vic,
Now I am at work and can explain myself better. Yes I was refering to the stall speed. My father had bought a B&M torque converter for one of his toys and he "thinks" it was a 2800 stall speed. This would be perfect for my car. He gave it to me last night, but is still unsure of what the stall is. I have all the numbers off of it. They are k-5636 and 2704. I called Summit and they could not help me out. I guess they archive there sales orders after 1 yr. Dad also said it might be a TCI. There is a sticker that was yellow on the converter, but only a little shard remains. I would bet the converter only has about 50 miles on it! If it is one that would work for me it would save me quite a chunk of change. If anyone has any idea of how to identify what converter this is I would appreciate the help. Thanks.

Guys,
Here is the deal. I called summit again and the torque converter is 2000 stall speed. It is a Summit converter. Do you think I will realize much of an improvement over stock? I realize a 2800 stall would be better, but this one is free! Can't get much better than that. I guess my question is, is it worth the work to change it over to the 2000 stall speed with my current setup. The Tech at summit said it would help, but a 2800 would be better. I believe Ralph, if perhaps he could chime in, is running a stock 85 with relatively the same setup as mine and I think they stall at 1800. I could be wrong, but definately would like to hear your opinions! Thanks guys.

Jesse

I believe Ralph said that he didn't gain much over his 85 convertor when he went to the Protoque.

Hopefully you can double check with him.

Also, are you planning to run ET streets or DR's ?

Vic,
I am not sure what tire I will run. I guess I will base my decision on how bad traction is. Right now I have dunlop sport 5000's and they grab unbelievable, but I think I need to do a lot more tuning to realize the potential of this setup. Last weekend I was messing around with both Craigs 1/4 mile calculator, and my g-tech and they were both pretty consistant. I was running around 13.1 sec 1/4 and I wasn't really hammering on it. Wheel spin was minimal. I am running a bit lean at times so I only ran it 2 times. I feel the higher stall speed with help out. The reason I brought up Ralph is that he told me a while ago that the 85s had looser converters than the 89s. I would think the 2000 stall speed would help get me car going quicker. Any thoughts?

I think the 2000 RPM converter will be perfect for you street L98 car. You will definitely notice a difference.

If it only has 50 miles on it...why did it get removed?

One other thing to consider on the comparison of the two converters is the STR ratio. If it is higher on the B&M then it is going to leave the line harder. However, from what I have read, there is some penelty to be paid in efficiency for a higher STR. Also are both converters 12 in?

if your wondering why the converter got removed, it because the big 509 got put infront of it! We didn't think the 2000 would cut it! It now has a 3600 in it. Just thought the 2000 would make a nice addition on the vette. Guess I will give it a try! Thanks guys!
