If that car has been sitting for a long time it may have a nasty tank. I was watching Two Guys Garage the other day and they had pulled in a barn find camaro. The tank was beyond belief. They put a new one in it.
If you can't find what you want you might look at Racetronix. They have an upgrade kit and some info. You might be able to figure out how to jump the fuel pump relay on to see if it has any output.
Just a note, the vette is about the only car I know of that you can get the in tank fuel pump out without pulling the tank. It comes out through the fuel filler door. Take the door off and a ring with bolts will get the pump and sender unit to come out. Easy enough, I saw a fuel pump changed in 20 minutes by a guy who had never put a pump in a vette before.
Might not be a bad idea to pull the pump and just look down in the tank. If it's all trashy you have to make sure the line isn't all rusty to.
Did you put a new fuel filter in it? It's behind the right wheel inside the frame.
Injectors might be trashy, if they are look at FIC injectors. They have all kinds of vids to look at. They have Bosch injectors for $165 a set.
yea the car sat a long time, Fuel filter was changed last weekend, I jumped the fuel pump relay this after noon and I clicked on but only when i jumped it not when I turned the key, Do you know if there is a diagram about the fuel tank, I havent taken a fuel pump out in a long time.
The fuel pump has 2 power sources, ECM controlled relay and the back up supply, the oil pressure switch. Both sources go through the fuse in panel, then to pump. You can apply 12+ volts to terminal "G", on the ALDL connector. This will supply 12 volts to the fuel pump circuit, for as long as you leave the power on "G". This makes it easier to follow the power, all the way to the pump.
just a note:
when you turn the key to the first position (lights on) the pump runs for 7 seconds. after it starts, it runs till you shut it off.
On my 86, sometimes I can't hear the pump run unless the window is down.
Starter fluid (or carb cleaner) combined with nothing coming out of the shrader valve confirmed fuel problem. I use the carb cleaner method all the time for crank but no start conditions. These guys have you on the right track.
A red block next to any of the guage readouts means out of spec. In your case, your voltage is too low for what ever reason. Get the car running under it's own power first, and will probably go away after the alternator builds up some charge.
Coolant light means radiator needs topped off with anti freeze, unless sensor or wiring is bad. Take the cap off and look.
You can rent a fuel pressure guage from Autozone. You put down a deposit and get your money back when you return it. A digital multi-meter is a must have for the do it yourselfer. Shop manual should be mandatory.
thanks guys, I replaced the fuel pump and the filter at the bottem of the pump today, hooked everything back together and It fired right up, and then it died again and wont start. I didnt check the fuel pressure with a gauge. other than that now i have to change the injectors?
Sounds like you have multiple problems at once. The fuel pressure regulator is mounted near the shrader valve on the fuel rail, a few inches back on the same side. It's round with a single vacuum hose on it. Pull the vacuum hose off it and check if you can see/smell gas in there. There should be none. If there is, the diaphram inside the regulator has failed.
But what you really need to do is pop that hood, attach a fuel pressure guage (rent from Autozone) to the fuel rail and lay it on the windshield so you can see it from the driver seat. Then crank the car again and see what the fuel pressure is doing when the car dies. Sould have about a steady 40 psi.
fuel pressure regulator smells of gas and the motor smells of gas when I crank the motor. I will rent the tool and let you know. what I dont want to do is replace the Injectors that would really be a pain.......
ok i have replaced the Fuel pump and sock, and the fuel pressure regulator is the next thing to replace cause right now i have little pressure. what tools do i need and Im assuming i need to take the plenum off right, thanks again for the help I cant wait to drive the car I have the summer itch.
Ok so first off if you can hear the fuel pump coming on you know that's not the issue. If it isn't coming on check fuse and check relay. You can buy a relay for like $12. If the fuel pump is coming on you can go to Advance Auto Parts or Autozone and buy a fuel pressure gauge for about $25 or so. Then you can check your fuel pressure. You say the valve didn't have pressure after you cranked the motor so either your fuel pump is not working, clogged lines or fuel filter or you have a bad fuel pressure regulator.
Also I sent you some pics of that Targa Top I have. Let me know if there is anything else I can do to help. I had some issues with mine when I first got it and have gone through everything. You live about 4 hours away from me to bad you weren't closer I'd come help you out.
Jay I'm on my phone and can't see the pics I will view them tommorw morning. I bought a diaphram this morning I'm going to install this weekend but need to buy the right torque wrenchs. Thanks for the help I will drop you a line in the morning about the targa top. Thanks again.
