Stupid question alert!!!

I'm planning to replace my thermostat tonight. I already have the old one out. My question is: Do I really have to wait 24 hours to let the gasket sealer set before I can start the car? The instructions say to wait that long but it seems a bit extreme to me. I have the red high emp sealant that claims to be safe for aluminum.

don't think you'll hurt anything by *not* waiting, but if you CAN wait it wouldn't be a bad idea just to be safe. Most of the time I don't even use sealer on the thermostat gasket, or just a very thin coat.

I'd use a thin coat of the gasket sealer (permatex: http://www.permatex.com/products/Aut...et_Sealant.htm) on both side of the gasket myself. I always put this stuff on H20 pumps and thermostat gaskets....nothing worse then having to redo a hard-to-reach job because of a small fluid leak.
