I've had this erratic idle for some time. Cleaned the IAC, checked the TPS, O2 sensor, etc. and finally gave up. Took it to a good shop who checked it out. Today they called and said that 7 of the 8 injectors were bad. If I remember correctly they stated that there should be 10 OEMs at an injector and mine were all over the board. From 6 to 20. They believe that this is what is causing my searching idle. I questioned the smooth operation until the engine warmed up and they stated that this was to be expected as the fuel delivery from the injectors changes after it warms up, closed to open loop (or vice versa). Of course the reason I'm questioning this, is the cost. They want between $1000 & $1500 to replace the injectors. Something about the injector coils being shot and injectors unable to be cleaned and/or fixed like later model injectors. This being the case, what do I do? Where can I buy new injectors at what kind of a price? I'm a pretty good wrench, should I attempt to replace these myself? I suppose you'all would suggest that I replace the EGR valve as long as the plenum is off, also. Again, what do you think? What would you do? Thanks, Frank

I also have the hunting spuratic running problem....... The injectors are the cause. The Accell Injectors are now $399.00 (set of 8) in the Summit Catalog, the dealer wants $120.00 each for the GM O.E.M  .......... I found a set of Accell's at the local speed shop for $299.00. Its not that hard to replace the Injectors, It should take the averarage weekend mechanic a cupple of hours to replace them.

What I would do is what I DID do last weekend. Pull the plenum, runners and fuel rail, swap in FMS injectors and re-assemble it. If they are charging $1,500, they are probably buying the overpriced GM injectors for $800 and then REAMING you on installation.
Re: 91 L98 Injectors-Replacements? What Do I Do? (Fastguy)
Change them yourself and allow plenty of time (a whole weekend). You will need plenty of time to clean gasket surfaces. As for the injectors, I am of a different opinion, get the 22#. The RC Engineering injectors are great injectors and the engine will be very balanced, important with a single O2 sensor and batch fired motor.
Be careful on re-assembly as the bolts in the plenum are at an angle. Start each by hand until you know they are in correctly. Leave loose until all are started. Also, there are two runner bolts that are on the inside, towards the rear on the driver's side and towards the front on the passenger side. To get at the passenger side one, you will need to remove the EGR solenoid that is held to the coolant neck.
This is not a hard job to do, just time consuming the first time as gaskets and such will be a mess when you take it apart and since you are dealing with aluminum you have to be careful cleaning the surfaces.
Re: 91 L98 Injectors-Replacements? What Do I Do? (Frank C)
OK, thanks for the opinions and direction. Got a couple of questions. I went to the archives and found that the Ford 24# injectors ($295 my cost locally) seem to work OK except they run rich in open loop and lean out at WOT, apparently. The Accel 22# seem to be the correct choice except quality control seems to be an issue. Some guys complained that they were shipped leakers. What are the RC Engineering injectors and where do you get um at how much. My buddy can get me the GM type for $82 or $84 but that's still pretty healthy...Thanks, Frank
Re: 91 L98 Injectors-Replacements? What Do I Do? (Fastguy)
I could probably wait but I'm under the impression from the garage and the archives that these can't be rebuilt as these 91's are early models compared to 93 or 94, whenever they changed them. I think I'll just order the new ones from Summit and be done with it. They want $250 delivered..Thanks, Frank
Re: 91 L98 Injectors-Replacements? What Do I Do? (Frank C)
I bought a set of rebuilt Bosch injectors from these folks and they are terrific. $250. They also offered me FMS injectors with a lifetime warrantee. :D http://www.lindertech.com

Oops, forgot the rest. My mechanic charged me $275. to put them in including new gaskets. That price you were were quoted is outrageous. :mad
Re: 91 L98 Injectors-Replacements? What Do I Do? (lspalding)
