Default S.A. Gear Timing chains?

I'm seeing a lot of this brand of timing chain lately. It looks like the Cloyes double roller sets. They are priced similar to the CLO-9-1145 set. And, they're sold at local parts stores. (I found a description stating the gears are made in USA with chains in Japan.)

Any feedback on these chains?

I tried one on a 557inch (385 series) Ford engine I built last year, in which the customer supplied the parts on. The timing marks didn't line up. No matter how I put it on they were either 1/2 a tooth off one way or the other @TDC. It either put the cam (which ground on a 106* ICL) on like 89* or 112* and the 3 keyways on the crank gear were no where near capable of helping to degree the cam in right....

I put it back in his box of parts and installed an Austrailian mfgrd Roll Master timing chain on it. Cam went in at 105.5* ICL strait up dot to dot.

I talked with a few other engine builders and they said they had tried SA Gear as well on various engines and all similar problems with MOST of the SA Gear sets they bought.

For the same money I'd buy a Cloyes every time. I've never had a bad one.

About a week or two ago I bought/put a single roller S.A. timing chain set on/for my rebuilt short block....quality looked OK out of the box.....but still have not turned the key on the motor yet. But I will let you know if it explodes or not when I finally get this ding dang thing totally put back together. My set was purhcased from Advanced.

Clay @ TPIS ended up talking me into the Cloyes True Roller (3145) today. I also got a cover from White Performance that's supposed to be deep enough to ensure clearance.

It happened when I called to straighten out the oil pump issue I also posted about. (I got the 10%HV model, 10552 I think.)

Thanks for the replies!

I also used an Autralian one on mine as it was donated to the project (good thing, it was $$).

In the past Ive always used Clyes with no issues. Im betting Summit brand is made by Cloyes also.
