Default [Poll]: Engine Rebuild Choices

If you had a nice rebuildable '90 L98 block at your disposal, what would you build and why?

I do not believe there is enough meat on these blocks to go that far.

You mean like the old one in my garage?

Seriously, though, it would depend on what I'm doing with the rest of the engine and budget before determinig which size to go with. All things being equal I'd probably stick with the 355.

A 396 - I don't like some of the compromises you have to make with a 4" crank, so 3.875 it is! Cubic inches pretty much rule - so go for as many as you can get! The only reason I would drop down inches is if you were racing in some sort of class and got a weight break that offset the loss of power.

When you throw budget considerations in there a cast crank 383 is also a good option though!

I'd go for the 383. There are a lot of stroker kits out there. Thats not to mention all the good folks here on the forum who have experience with them.

383... it seems to be the most common upgrade and with that in mind, more people know them and their collective knowledge is at your disposal.

you can get 427 out of these motors... the problem... EXPENSIVE. It cost Car & Driver $50,000.00 to build that 427 inch smallblock... they used a nascar block, which is based on the old L98 block... more strength down low...

It really depends on Money...but seems the 383 is the choice for compromise between great power and a budget.

I wouldn't do it on an L98, but given the money I'd love to build a 396 stroker. If you go completely forged it doesn't cost much extra than a 383 and is a little less common. Everybody has a 383, I just wanna be different.

Why Scorp? Have a motor to build?

I'd go with 355 too. I dont think i would trust all the clearance work on the block doin a stroker. id do a quality component build up. Convert the mains to 4-bolt raise the compression and I'd even port the stock intake and keep a stock appearence. I think 350 horses would be possible.

Hehehehe. :D Yeah yeah... Anyway.... The reason why I said that was because me and a friend were talking and he said something that it would produce awsome torque and HP's # and keep pulling on to 9 or 10 grand. Now that was supposely on Desk Top Dyno 2000, but what cam, heads, induction, ect I don't know HE never said. Now whether thats right or not who knows....

With a 350 block going over a 396 is pretty tough... you can, through a bit more bore, but gets risky the farther you go.

To build a stout 427 isn't to expensive... the 1st expense is an aftermarket block such as Dart's with a 4.155 bore and with a 3.875" stroke you're at roughly 420 cubic inches.... take .030 to .040 out of the cylinders and you're at 427.... the block can be had ready to go for under $ 2k....another 2-3 k in the rotating assembly and you have a really stout short block that should live for years under 7000 rpm.

To answer Scorps question.... a destroked 350 or a 355 would be fun motors with the ability to rev wayyy up provided you spent the money for a solid rotating assembly. A little more stroke with the 396, but a 383 is awfully popular and familiar to the engine builders..... up to you, both would probably quench your speed appetite, but as somebody else said.... the more cubes the better.

good luck

Don't go on it based on my luck...but you know as well as I do this 383 is solid as a rock, and it's been through hell as you know.

you won't be sorry.

I would probably go with a 383. However, a 383 will not do much unless you get headers and open up the intake. Unless you have the money for porting the plenum, siamesed runners, forged pistons, ARP bolts, ported or new intake manifold, 52mm Throttle body, larger MAF sensor, full headers with O2 sensor, adjustable fuel pressure regulator, and a new set of injectors (ford 24# will do); I would just get a *nice* 355 done up.
The 355 is a good motor. You can leave the compression the same and look at a supercharger setup. Or you could go for some high compression with a bit more power. CHP (Chevy high performance) had an article a few months ago where they built a 355 with 400hp that could run on 87. The funny thing was the compression was still like 12:1. Check out their site http://www.chevyhiperformance.com
If you have the money for nice 383 or want more cubes than that then I would go for a stroked small block 400. There is a user on this site that helped me with my rebuild that is running a SBC 400, JAKE. Talk to him and I am sure the right option will come to you.
As soon as I get the money and locate the block I *WILL* build a SBC 400. Why not?....its the biggest motor you can get in there!
