Default Sensor Help

Just a quick question. Is the oil temp sensor located in the right side head of an 1986 coupe? I know water temp sensor is in the left head, and oil pressure is in the back of the block.
Thanks,
Joe

Thanks,

For an '86 I'm pretty sure the oil temp sensor is just above the oil filter in/on the block.

What sensor am I looking at on the right side head? It has a single wire.

Some times I'm just stupid. My car uses two computers, the stock one and a Accel DFI to run the engine. Because the two work independently of each other, they use two coolant temp semsors. Thanks for trying to help me,
Joe

With the Accel, why does the old ECM need coolant temp info? What does the old ECM do other than run the fuel mileage display? The sensor in the right side head is the ECT (Engine Coolant Temperature) sensor. In the left head is the aux fan switch if you have an aux fan. The oil pressure gauge and oil pressure switch are at the top of the block, in the rear to the left of the distributor. Your oil temperature sensor is in the left side of the block above the oil filter boss.

RACE ON!!!

EDIT: This, in blue, is incorrect. See post 10.

The stock PCM uses the sensor to run the gauge and fans, The Accel uses a sensor to run the engine. The aux. fan does run off the left head sensor, that is corect. Thanks for all the input.

The stock "PCM" does not control the gauge. The stock "PCM" does not control the fans, only the main fan. Go back and reread post #5. It explains the gauge sending unit. Your Accel doesn't have an output to control the fan??? I covered all the stock sensor locations in post 5. Where do you have your second ECT sensor located?

RACE ON!!!

EDIT: Post 5 does NOT correctly explain the gauge sending unit nor all the other stock sensors. See post 10.

I'm not quite sure what all this discussion is about? The OP wanted to know what the sensor on the pass. side of the engine is that has one wire coming out of the middle of it; and it IS the EGR sensor. It doesnt run any fans, it's part of the EGR system.

I misspoke and you misread. I never said it ran a fan. I said:
"The sensor in the right side head is the ECT (Engine Coolant Temperature) sensor. In the left head is the aux fan switch if you have an aux fan."

It should say: The sensor in the right side head is the temperature gauge sending unit. The ECT (Engine Coolant Temperature) sensor is in the front of the intake manifold. The aux fan switch location is correct. My apologies to all.

The discussion is about giving the OP the correct answer to his question. Which was,"Is the oil temp sensor located in the right side head of an 1986 coupe?" I am referring to the 3/8" NPT hole into the water jacket in the head between the #6 and #8 spark plugs. I am pretty sure the OP was too. In 1986 and up for several years, that is the location of the temp gauge sending unit. There is a "switch, EGR temp" that the parts book shows at the right rear of the engine, but I can't tell what it screws into. I believe it makes sure the hot exhaust gases are flowing, indicating if the EGR valve is opening when it is supposed to. That item does not install into the head. If I had the '86 FSM or a car to look at, I would tell you what that EGR switch installs into. It has to be a passage that exhaust gases pass through only when the EGR valve is open. Not the head.

Is this the end of the discussion?

I guess the mental image I had when he said in his second post, 'the one with the single wire coming out of the right hea' is the egr sensor on my 86. It screws into the manifold at the rear of the plenum on the right side.
