Apparently not all year roller block cam retainers are the same. I started assembling my new 383 (casting# 10243880, zz4 block) today and the cam retainer from my 89 does not match up. The new block's tapped holes are more narrow than the plate from my 89. No parts stores that are open at 1830 on a Saturday around here have one to compare.
Does anyone know if this is the case?
I hate when something small like this stops all progress! I guess I am just too spoiled by the interchangeability of the SBC, I expect everything to crossover.

Same here ; my Vortec block wouldn't take the L98 retainer.
Also the oil gallery plugs size at the front changed ( 2 small and one larger ); that was annoying on a Sunday with a 25yr supply of SBC parts and no plugs to seal the block up with
I have GM # 10168501 (3.294" bolt pattern ) as the ZZ4 retainer
The ZZ -ZZ3 and L98 is 3.620"
