Looked at a decent 88 Convertible yesterday. The owner described a situation where he was using synthetic oil to slow down a leak between the Engine and Transmission. I hope I am describing this correctly, but he talked about the 'main bearing' costing $45 for the part, but $900 to do the work as the engine would have to be removed. My wife and I both liked the car, and everything else is fine with it, but the potential of buying it and having such a serious problem concerns us. Thanks in advance for any light you can shed on this issue !
If he's talking about an oil leak at the rear of the engine, that would be the rear main seal. Your best bet is to take the car to a professional and get a second opinion. Spending a little money now could save oyu a lot later.
It's a costly job the trans dose have to come out but not the motor you have to drop the oil pan replace the seal. Call around and get a price then take that off the selling price. At least the seller didn't try to pull one over on you and was up front about what was needed
An 88 has a 1 piece rear main, so you don't have to drop the pan, just remove the trans and flywheel. An 88 convertible with an auto is 7.3 hours labor, plus the cost of the seal.

you didnt say whether its an auto or manual. I say this because if its a manual, you very well may get into the " while its torn down,I might as well replace..'" frame of mind. in the cae of an auto..is it 'may as well' front seal replacement time. If its a great buy and you dont get hosed on the fix, buy it.
