has anyone upgraded the U-joint bolting straps on the rear ends yoke?
I've been doing a trannie pull (replacing clutch pivot ball) and was wondering about those little sheetmetal straps and small bolts holding the rear U-joint in place. anyone make a beefier assembly? or has anyone had problems with it?
hmmm, carbon fiber driveshaft would be neat.
oh, its on a 86
thanks guys

There are U joint bearing cap "girdles" availble. These are mostly an all out race type of item. Not because they are hard to live with, but because you don't need them unless you're putting out an ungodly amount of power. The drive forces are between the U joint bearing cap and the yoke. The straps and bolts, merely retain the cap into the yoke. Unless the yoke is worn, there are no forces trying to eject the bearing cap. If the yoke is spitting the joint out, you need a yoke, not a girdle.
thanks CFI-EFI,
I don't have any problems with it. It just looked a little wimpy to me. while I have never had a problem, I have heard of some of these type letting go on older off brand cars with big blocks.
I know I won't be putting out more power than alot of people on the forum, so if it hasn't been a problem for them it will let me sleep easier.
