Default Throttle body, CAM

have mine off.......wondering what I would gain with a larger one on a mostly stock engine........Is it worth it??

Is there a CAM that I can use that WILL NOT need computer work???

I am porting the plenum as we speak.

Most cams that will give you a worthwhile increase need a computer reprogram (mainly for idle etc...).

Going to a larger TB on a stock engine is not worth it. Some tests have shown a decrease in performance when doing this. On the otherhand, a good 383 would benefit from a 52mm or 54mm .. 58mm is overkill if ya ask me. You have to port the intake to make it worth it for anything over 52mm anyway.

Maybe someone knows of something that work though... but the nature of what a bigger cam does makes me think there's nothing that will do fine with a stock program.

I'm using the ZZ4 cam in a relatively stock engine except for the crane rr's and an accel base and it runs just fine. This cam has a 474I and 510E with a 208/221 duration so its not huge but makes a good improvement over the stock unit.

My car is an 89 so its using a MAF, I don't know how sensitive the MAP is, but I do hear there are a little more finicky. You might want to pick the brains of TPIS or Lingenfelter, there're pretty decent to talk to and they've done this a lot of times before.

I think Cams that are too radical can utilize stock programming (The sensors will pick up the change and adjust the fuel air to compensate) however, it may benift you even more if you add a chip custom tuned for your cam.. :p:

The main thing is the idle though. I had to throw my car into neutral at lights to keep it from dying with the stock program. I definitely wouldn't want to have to put up with that all the time!

You could run a cc305 or hotcam on stock programing, the only downfall is you'll loose a few mpg's and a little low end torque. You will also still be stuck with the factory rev limiter. So you have to figure out what you looking for, you won't get the most out of the cam with stock programing, but you will see gains. A new program for the computer is the best hp producing method, but it's not required. I know this for a fact because i had a cam very similar to the hotcam/cc305 and those were the downfalls.
