L98 Sensor Between Cylinders 6 & 8
While putting on a set of headers I broke the sensor screwed into the head between cylinders 6 & 8, 1985 Corvette. I believe this is the knock sensor and to replace it I need to drain some coolant from the cooling system. Is this correct?

The one between 6 & 8 on the head I believe is the coolant temp sensor for the instrument gage cluster. If your engine coolant is super old I drain the entire system and refill with fresh stuff.
If the coolant isn't that old and there is enough to grab with a tool and you can still unthread it I wouldn't drain the coolant just pickup and extra sensor and swap it out real quick while the coolant tries to escape....the new sensor should come with thread sealant already on it.

I know on my '90 that sensor is the temp GAUGE. Mine was unplugged and my gauge did not work but fans came on. Maybe they moved the fan temp sensor on later years..

Thanks for the help. I ordered the sensor and it should be ready to pickup tomorrow morning. Few more fit adjustments on the headers and it should be ready to fire up. Will take it to the strip and see how the numbers come out.

I know this is an old thread, but the predominant answer seems to be that the passenger side is for the gauge, but on my 85, it's for the aux fan. I believe it's the same for 85-89 if you have an AUX fan.
Just ground the connector with the key on and see if the gauge changes or the fan kicks on to know for sure.

They swapped the fan switch and temperature sensor in 1986. From then on the temperature sensor for the instrument cluster was in the passenger side head.
