do I have. With a 93 coupe with no special packages. I don't have the vin with me if needed but could get it tonite. Also is there any way to know if the gears have been changed. Can you count the turns on the drive shaft vs rotations on a wheel?

The stock 93 automatic has a 4L60 transmission and a dana 36 rear axle, standard ratio is 2.59, if it has the performance axle ratio it will be 3.07. If the gears have been changed your method of counting driveshaft rotation and comparing to wheel rotation will tell you.
OK, After getting home and looking in the FSM, the only auto trans they have listed is the 4L60. All along I thought it was the 700R4 but wasn't sure. So, is it safe to believe that if it is the only one in the book then it must be the right one? I found in the manual where to look for the gear ratio (assuming it hasn't been changed) on the case. They list several ratios in the book.
There should be a white sticker with a bunch of codes either in the glove box or arm rest door,or sometimes in the rear trunk storage doors. There are codes there you can look at and post here.
On older cars,I believe the codes for a 700R4 was the MD8 and a performance rear axle will say G92 or G44.
Can you find anything in your car that has codes like this?Thats a start to figure out what your car came with.

4L60 = 700R4 same damned thing. Look inside your center console lid for your RPO codes. GM1= 2.59 rear gears which most of them had. The 2.59 gears will tach 2000rpm @ 80mph
oh yeah another real easy way is to call a chevy dealership, and they will ask you a couple of questions, and then they will give you your build codes, I had to do that on my last one.
i had a 700r4 in my 93 but it was the early 93, the late 93s have the 4l60. an easy way to tell if you have an early or a late 93 is to look at the belt, if its double sided grooved its an early if the grooves are only on one side its the late 93.
The Hydramatic 700R4 was introduced in 1982 for use in Chevrolet/GMC vehicles.
In 1990 the 700R4 was renamed the 4L60.
1992 was the last year of wide spread usage of the 700R4 (4L60).
1993 Camaro, Corvette & Typhoon were equipped with the last production 700R4's, also the last design change of the 700R4 with an added checkball to the valve body.
In 1992 electronic controls were added and it became the 4L60-E. The 4L60E went into service in trucks, vans, and SUVs in 1993 (for the record, some HD trucks had the 4L60) and in all RWD passenger cars (Corvette, F and B/D bodies) in 1994.

Yeah I did a little shopping today for price checking. I'm kinda thinking about 3.07's but I have an engine to put together first. I keep trying to tell myself "patience grasshopper"
imo something in the 3.5x range would serve you well.im going with 3.89 myself, and i still plan on several 3 hour trips every year.do you think that the 2.59 gears make your car is alot slower than it should be?i feel that way about mine.i test drove a 87 iroc a4 with 62 miles on the clock and i promise it would have smoked my 92 c-4,at least for 1320ft.

Do you have a D44? I don't believe the D36 careier will take anything bigger than the 3:73's?
I also am going to do a gear swap and tourqe conv. change. I have changed gears before and had to redo them because I played it cautous and should have went lower. I don't think you will notice enough of a diff to spend the money and time going to 3:07's, maybe a couple hundred rpm's at highway speed. go with the 3;53's and you will be much happier unless you are only interested in top end speeds. Just my 2 cents!
