On Board Diagnostics
What year did they start putting on board diagnostics in the C4? I know that OBD2 started in 1996 for all cars, but I also now that there were earlier versions that were placed in many cars in the 80's. So if I were to pick up an 84-88 Vette, what would it have as far as diagnostics? And how do you read the codes? The C5 can read/clear all codes and reset engine lights from the DIC, Im guessing if the 84-88 has anything it will NOT be able to do theis and Ill have to get some type of scanner to read the codes?

All C4's had some form of on-board diagnostics. OBD2 is just a standard set of data that all cars were required to provide starting in 1996. Prior to 1996, GM used its own ALDL defininitions, which can be read with various scan tools or a laptop with an interface cable and the proper software.
