Hey guys, For the L98, I have been told the ZZ-9 Cam seems to offer the most performance and can still use it as a daily driver. I have also been old it can take up to .8 off your 1/4 ET. Sounds good too me :D . Does anyone have experiance with this cam, or others that you feel are really nice upgrade? Any Info would be helpful. Oh and is it a Roller Cam and what should i expect to pay for it? Thanks Again
P.S. I was thinking when I get the Vette that I will throw in the Crane Gold Rollers and the ZZ-9 cam (I know there will be other things like valve springs if i need them and what not, im just trying to get an idea). From this what would you expect a 89 Vette 6spd be running in the 1/4??
I have the zz9 in my daily driven lt4 and the best advice I can give you is to keep looking for another cam.I am not so happy with the results of this cam or TPIS. they act as if they are the only people that can make these cars run. and so they get every one into the mindset that they are the greatest and then they charge the pants off you for there sub-par parts. If i was to do it all over again I wouldnt use this cam I would give a good hard look at competition cams or lingenfelter.best of luck
Does anyone else agree with "richN", they are damn expensive... I was looking at Crane, they seem to have some nice products. Crane had a Roller Cam and Lifter for the L98 for $259. And Im goin to use the Crane Gold Roller Rockers, so I always find it helpful to try and use the same brand. Thanks Again
I hope your not planning to throw a cam in an otherwise stock L98. I don't have any experience with tpis, but I do have the LPE 219. I have nothing bad to say about. It was a little pricey but in my opinion when you use it with the parts it was designed for its well worth it.
If you go with a cam do full rollers (ProMagnums are very nice) and 7/16" studs. Also toss the oil sheders from atop the springs and install Ti retainers with 10deg locks.
At that point it would benefit you to pull the #113 heads (if you get a '88 or newer L98) and have them pocket ported, etc (check out the mail I sent you).
Check the e-mail data for expected 1/4 mi and HP gains. Although it's for a '90 Vette 6-speed, it should be close for an '89. Plus you won't need a chip to benefit, at least not right away.
The zz9 cam is crap, pure and simple. It is a ripe off of the zz4 camshaft by GM. Just compare the specs. ZZ4 is 208/221 at .474 and .510 on a 1.5. The zz9 is 212/226 at .483 and .520 on 1.5. Yes its a bigger cam, but my god not big enough of a cam for 400 some dollars. Look at the cranes, good quality camshafts. I really do believe companies such as comp cams, Lunati, crower, crane, wolverine, etc. are more about getting people the right camshaft, then trying to get them to spend more money. Give them a call sometime, they'll offer some good advice.
Corvette Fever did an article on modifying a 90 L98 six speed and they did drop .7 in the 1/4 mile with this cam. Had the ZZ9 in my 350 LT-1 and was real pleased. 11.9 at 117MPH with a best of 119.5MPH in the 1/4 mile. The best NA time I've seen for a six speed Corvette LT-1 was with this cam.
The ZZ9 cam was designed for use with a Miniram intake, not a TPI. A cam swap in a TPI without other changes, heads/intake/exhaust, isn't going to give you much gain anyway. Only changing part of the flow can even result in worse performance. About the biggest cam you can use in a stock, or large runnered TPI, is an LPE 74211. If you go to a Superram, then the LPE 74219 would be a good choice.
I have a ZZ-9 cam for sale, it will cost you much less than $375. My price is $250 shipped to your door. I have it listed in the C4 Parts Wanted/For Sale section. I bought it as new from another forum member and I've never installed it. I'm going to selling my car so I have no need for it. Let me know if you're interested, my email addy is doublelife@microdsi.net. Thanks!
Listen to the years of experience on this board. Do not swap that cam into a stock engine. It isn't made for it. Upgrade the exhaust, intake system first or at the same time....otherwise you will be disappointed. The rockers are okay to do so long as you check for coil bind if going larger than 1.5. Good luck and enjoy. :seeya
I dont kno where you guys got the impression that Im just gonna through it in a stock engine im def not. But i didnt take the time to go to the original post so it may have given off that impression. My pops would port and polish the heads and Runners for me (so thats pretty cool), K&N open lid intake, headers, and a cat back, then from there i wanted to do the Cam, lifters, Valve Springs and rockers. So Its def not going to be stock. I want to know this stuff now so when I get the Vette i can just jump right into it knowing what works best, Thanks guys
I have the ZZ9 cam in my daily driver. I find it is just fine even with 1.6 Roller rockers.
I have not ran it at a track yet so I cant see how it compares to others cars.
But for sure, if you go ZZ9 cam, you need a Super ram or a Mini Ram.
There is no point to having a TPI on a motor with that cam, you will be choking it!
