I think you can get a fairly cheap plug in part to bypass VATS. My personal opinion is that if it isn't causing a problem, why bother with it? It seems that a very small percentage of people ever have a problem wih it (of course, if you wind up stranded, it is a 100% problem).

Find the key pellet resistance chart (search my threads) and measure your key to identify the precise correct resistance. Buy a few $ of resistors at Radi* Sh*ck and combine them to get the precise value. Measure the final set of resistors to be sure.
Get under the drivers side and separate the VATS connector and put the resistor leads in place of the connector coming from the ignition switch. That is the resistors are connected to the computer. Make sure the car will start. Reconnect the ignition switch lead to preserve the VATS functionality.
Then Hide the resistor set somewhere in the car such that only you will find it. Use in emergency.
I got stuck twice by VATS then followed this procedure. Of course I haven't needed to use it &*^%##$.
Good luck.
Vats by pass for key pellets sold cheap at Mid America. VATs system bypass sold for 100 plus dollars at PCM for Less. I kept getting stranded and bypassed the key pellet. That did not fix the problem so I tried the VATS system bypass at PCMforless.com. Have not had a no start issue since doing that. Many on forum disagree with VATs bypass. I certainly did not need it.
