OK I left the drive shaft off the oil pump when I buttoned up the bottom end, how do I install it from the top if the hole is too small for the alignment sleeve?? :cry
...if the hole is too small for the alignment sleeve?? :cry
 You can't slide the shaft in from the top? Its been a while since I rebuilt my motor but I seem to remember putting it in after installing the pump. I thought it fell out on me once so I just waited and put it in right before I installed the heads and intake (with distributor). I'm not sure if other manufacturers have different diameter sleeves... but yours is a steel sleeve, right? If you can't get it in from the top then you'll have to pull the pump or find another shaft with a smaller diameter sleeve... if there are any.
Actually we were using a metal sleeve, it was too big so I took it to a machinist and had him cut it down but it still wouldn't work and I am really frustrated right now. :cuss
I'm not sure what else to do. Is the motor in the car? What type of gasket do you have on the pan? If its the one piece rubber gasket, which requires no sealant, then it might easier to just drop the pan...
Well, if you have to peel the pan my suggestion would be to buy the one piece rubber gasket. Mine is a Felpro... others make them too. Probably about $30 but it doesn't leak and I can drop my pan at any time if I feel I have a problem and easily reuse the rubber gasket. I understand your frustrations... but once you have it in and running you'll forget about this minor issue :yesnod:
