Default exhaust question ?

I bought my 92 with the factory exhuast removed from the cats back. They installed 2 3/4 or 3" pipes with the louder 40 series flowmaster mufflers and removed the resonator. The system sound nice but is just a hair to loud on the interior especially at hwy speed. Is there anything I can do besides change mufflers to help with the resonance. Will an H pipe installed change sound I was thinking of doing this anyway. In the future I will probably run some shorty headers. Im not sure what the stock system even looked like. were they true duals or did they go to duals after a resonator? Any sugestions?

You can put the resonator back or install an X pipe and quieter muffs.

Factory is 2 3/4" pipes and true duals. The series 40 flowmasters will be loud, maybe find some LT1 stock mufflers if you want it quiet.
ps - some say shorty headers on the LT1 is just a waste of money.

I had the exact same setup. Not only was it way too loud. the drone at freeway cruise was unbearable. I later found that the driver's side cat was completely blown out which couldn't have helped. I installed a Corsa exhaust which was expensive, but with which I am very satisfied.

For about a $1,000 less, try reinstalling the resonator.

Good luck and save the wave

I didn't do the exhaust so I don't have the resonator. Does the resonator restrict the exhaust ? does it quit the exhaust all around or just in the resonance rpm range? Does the X pipe make a diff in noise?

I wouldn't bother with shorty headers. You'll gain some savings in weight, but other than that, the stock headers do just as well. Now long tubes are where you'll get both weight and performance increases.

You can probably find a resonator on the for parts sale section. The resonator balances the exhaust like a X pipe would. An X pipe alone won't quiet things down.
Your real problem is those damn Flowmasters. Those are for teenies.

Whats the best compromise between performance and sound? I would assume a Turbo type muffler? Who's got good sound and quality?

The stock LT1 exhaust is very good. The cat back by Corsa gets the best reviews for sound and performance. I don't know if you can buy just the mufflers. I put on Magnaflow dual outlet stock replacements on my L98 and really like them.
