Best ATF for an '84 automatic???
DO NOT use the cork gasket as I always have bad luck with them leaking(find a rubber gasket like was previously said). After the filter & gasket is changed have the shop do a transmission flush.Won't be a bad idea to use a little Lucas transmission or other transmission additive after flush is complete.Use Dextron III as this is good transmission fluid & is recommended for your car.Use Synthetic if you drive your car hard or you want to go longer between transmission services & flushes.Have this work done at a Professional shop not some Jiffy Lube as most of the people there are not professionals & are people off the street with no technicial background.Don't get me wrong there may be some knowledgeable people there that can do the job properly but I wouldn't trust my car with them & seen too many problems with them doing things to cars.Flushing the transmission is good for the transmission & if it has problems after the flush the transmission was on its way out anyways(bad trans).Good idea to go through all the paper work with the vehicle & see what has been done.If no paperwork it would be a good idea to have all fluids replaced that way you will have a paper trail on the car & know when these things have been done. Also have a full tune-up done but keep the old stuff in case you want to have the car judged(NCRS?)-I can't remember the name.Take good care of her, that 84 is CLEAN
I have never replaced a trans in any car i owned either.
Thats just my opinion though. I think once you open that sealed trans case then you have problems. I have seen people have theirs flushed and not long after they start having problems.
I just leave mine alone and check the level once a week. I check all the levels in my cars once a week and top off where needed. I also only get oil changes every 10,000 miles. That 3,000 mile oil change it bull.
There is a great add in Consumers reports that did a study on oil for cars. No difference in viscosity or performance from 3000 to 12000. Only a color change. To me its a waste of money.
These are just my opinoins.

Bad recommendations in my opinion.I wouldn't go longer than 7,000 miles between oil changes(when using synthetic).I use synthetic in my vette & change it every 6 months or 4,000 miles.I've seen TOO MANY problems with people & their cars going long distances between oil changes as oil can become corrosive/acidic & cause gaskets/seals to leak, timing chain guide wear, engine sludge, etc. Its a good idea to check fluid levels on cars once a week like you said but should only have to add washer fluid otherwise you have leaks.I don't believe comsumer reports as I've seen these problems in the field as previously stated.DON"T BELIEVE EVERYTHING YOU READ.Ask people with EXPERIENCE.Maybe you've had good luck so far & if its been working for you keep doing what your doing but I GUARANTEE your engine has sludge buildup if you've been going 10,000 miles between oil changes
I not being mean here just expressing my professional opinion & have seen this in the field as being a Professional for over 8 years. As far as the fluid being read thats a fine idea not to change it but fluid does break down overtime & even with 2,000 miles on a old car(20 years old-example) with red appearing trans. fluid it should be changed.I respectfully disagree & this is an opinion.
