My '87 will ONLY start on the first crank. If it doesn't catch immediately, I have to wait about 5 minutes to try and start. Once started it will restart throughout the day. The next morning same problem. Also have a code 36 and the engine hesitates when throttled. Before this problem(s), car ran great!
Code #36: Mass Air Flow Sensor Burn-Off Function Fault.
I would clean MAF and get a new relay. It's cheap about $ 6.00 for the cleaner & about $18.00 for the relay
Thank you for your advice. I cleaned the MAF and replaced the relay. Still have the problem of no start. What would cause an engine to start ONLY on the first crank? If it doesn't catch on the first try, I have to wait several minutes to attempt restart. Is it fuel, electrical or security related? Once it does start, it runs OK except for a hesitation when giving it gas. I would appreciate your thoughts.
Yes, it cranks strong after first attempt but does not start. I've tried various things like holding gas pedal to the floor, not touching the pedal, turn ignition to run, wait 2 seconds (for fuel pump). It will not start after first crank, but will if I let it sit for several minutes, but then again ONLY on the first crank. Thanks
Do a resistance check on your injectors hot & cold. Also next time it happens try disconecting the MAF and try starting it. Have you checked the fuel pressure

I disconnected the MAF and the engine starts. With the MAF disconnected the engine did not always start on the first crank, BUT now it is starting on the 2nd crank. This is an improvement. What should I do next? I really appreciate your assistance.
