Default "Clink" when I put it in reverse

I have an '84 with an automatic transmission, when I shift into reverse the car makes a clink noise from under the car, I don't know if its from the rear end or the tranny area. U-joint maybe? I was just wondering if anyone else has had a similar experience. Thanks

Depending on how bad the clink is, it could be normal. Mine has done that ever since I bought it and the U-joints are fine.

I dont think this is a U joint. This is something that goes back all the way to 1984.I cant remember what it is But Ive heard the noise and it sounds like a hollow clink, only in reverse.

Yeah, now that you mention it, it does sound kind of hollow, let me know if you remember, I'm heading out of town until Sunday and I was planning to tackle this issue next week, It'll be nice to have a better idea what I'm looking for

Its been so long but there might have been a dealer recall on this.I had a friend that his car would do this.Put the car in reverse and as soon as the transmission would engage you would hear the clink.

The sound could be completely normal. I've replaced all u joints & bushings and mine still makes the noise.

My 84 does it too. I'm just used to it since it doesn't seem to affect anything.

When your rearend starts to go, it will make a clinking sound. It started in reverse and then gradually started happening shifting from 1st to 2nd. You might need your gears replaced and new seals.

If it isn't not u-joints then it's the excessive backlash your hearing on your ring and pinion. The only way to fix it is to go through the rear end and put new bearings in it and check shim depth etc. It will probably last like that for a long time depending on how you drive it. Other than that it's just anoying.

P.S. I just reed that washer thread, I never heard of this until know, very well could be the problem. Im use to hearing this on cars without half shafts.

Without actually hearing the noise you are experiencing, it is hard to say exactally what it is. You have been given a lot of good suggestions so far (although some are unlikely). I am not familiar to any problems specific to the 84 but I have chased a couple of noises in my rear end. You have probably read the washer thread. It is truely a cause of clicking/klinking noises as well as a cause of potentially serious damage to the rear spindles/hubs. I also recently fixed a thumping sound in the rear of my car again by replacing all the rubber bushings with poly ones. The rubbers were just worn out and the suspension bits (not exactly sure which ones.... control arms I think) would clunk around when going between reverse and forward gears.

Look things over real close, inspect your u-joints, look for unusal wear\play and fix whatever you find is wrong.
