I think whenever you "flow more air" you are giving up some torque down low for HP up higher in the powerband. At 65, your car is as low as a car gets RPM wise. My car gets exactly 25mpg at 65 on level road. It is a 85 also...you auto or 4+3?
An engine needs the Proper Ratio of Air & Fuel to burn efficiently. With more Air an engine needs more Fuel in order to burn efficiently and produce the Maximum amount of power.
Mass Air Flow (MAF), (MAP) and O2 sensors monitor the amount of Incoming air and report to the computer which adjusts the fuel to get the proper ratio.
Would I benefit from a tune? Or will I have to do more mods before it would actually help me?
So far i have..
Ported plenum, Ported base, AS&M's, gutted cat, open air lid, relocated IAT Sensor (removed from plenum because it was an airflow blocker) and the "monza" mufflers.
I am also curious how much our cars could benefit from a chip tune. My mods are similar to yours, minus the runners. How much of a top end increase did you get with the runners and ported base?? Mine falls flat on it's *** at 4 grand.
I"m not real experienced with engine building, since i'm only 17 but i can feel an increase.
I'd say that it pulls up to about 4500, i'm not sure though.
That loose injector wire made a world of difference, I JUST got back from a "drive" and it hauls even more *** than I want it to. (even tho thats not possible)
If i would get a tune, i think i would get one from Ed Wright..everybody seems to like his chips. his website is www.fastchip.com
I think its a good alternative to PCM for less because they don't tune 85's. Ed does.
