I thought they were usually on autos vs a clutch safety switch on a manual. But I believe the point is to prevent the starter from turning unless the trans is in neutral.
I am not aware of any manual transmission cars with a neutral safety switch. Certainly not a C4. Therefore, in answer to your question, no purpose and no function. Has some one added one to your car? That would be the person to ask, the rouge installer.
On automatic transmission cars, the neutral safety switches are universal accouterments. For one thing thing, a working switch will help you get through tech at the drag strip. If the car is started in "gear", and revving the engine to keep it running or for any other reason, the car is likely to make a sudden, unexpected movement. Likewise with a clutch interlock switch that necessitates disengaging the clutch while the car is started.
Doesn't he mean the clutch interlock or whatever you want to call it (My Manuals say it's the Clutch Start Switch)? The defense lawyers - I thought - decided that you might not be smart enough to know that cranking it over in gear could cause it lurch into the garage wall - so there's a switch that won't let it crank unless the clutch is depressed. Feel free to Bypass it depending on your age and degree of dementia.
Well if you drive most new cars with an intel-a-key and push button start either brake or clutch must be applied before starting. Takes me back to when Audi had a problem running over and through things because they would start in gear or so the owners claimed.
I'm not sure exactly what it is called (That's what my mechanic called it) but I have a C4 that ocassionally jumps out of second gear when coasting to a stop (never while under acceleration) and I we're hoping that this switch may be the culprit and not an internal transmission problem. We already drained and re-filled the clutch fluid until clear and that didn't solve the issue so we shall see.........

Clutch switch has no effect on trans;only on your abilty to start car in gear ;suspect you have trans wear problems.
Pretty common trans problem ,need a new mechanic

If so any source for reasonable re-built units around or is it best to have the existing one overhauled? Would this issue be flywheel related at all?

The 4 speed part of your trans is the common BW Super T10 gearbox used in many cars so parts are readily available. The trans case however is unique to the 4+ 3 setup so you can't just buy a rebuilt Super T10 and bolt it up to your O/d.
Dependent apon labour cost most likely cheaper to rebuild yours

or rebuilt
You seriously need a new mechanic.
Any so called mechanic that would even conjecture that a neutral safety switch or bad clutch fulid would cause a tranny to kick out of gear isn't even qualiifed to work in Wall of China Marts Quick Oil Change.
Don't let that dumbazz anywhere near your car ever again
