Good luck with it. Like they say paint is only as good as the prep, do your homework.

Some lowly bastard backed into my front bumper and left the scene. I did not even know till someone pointed it out to me several days later.

As soon as the weather clears, I'm going to start sanding this thing down and prepping it myself. I'm thinking of going with Torch Red. This isn't my only vehicle so I don't care if it takes me a while.

Pictures of your progress would be great.

Anybody want to trade a late rear bumper for an early?

I wish I had both the sack and the time to try what you are doing. I bought my car with peeling paint, cracks etc and I cheaped out at maaco. I know, how could I do such a thing. Any way, they did all the prep and paint for $799 and believe it or not it looks decent a year later. By no means is it close to the beautiful showroom jobs I have seen some of you guys do but it is so much better than it was and I get to waste my money on all the other great projects this car needed. Good luck, I am sure you will do a great job. If anyone wants to see the maaco special, send me your email And I can send pics or I think that there are a few on my profile

I'm only doing the prep. I'm not messing with the paint. I'm going to ask the guy who painted my brother's Cutlass Supreme for a quote on paint only if I do all the prep.

If the $600.00 includes paint I would be afraid, very afraid. I did the prep on mine, had it sealed, colored and clear coated for $1,700.00. Sounds high but materials alone were $900.00, I have the invoices. For $600.00 I would be afraid I was getting Mary Carter house paint...........
Just saying.

No matter what you pay ask the painter what he wants as prep. When I delivered mine it was so slick and smoothe even sharows slid off it. First thing the painter did was to attack it wit 220 paper and a sander. After he finished and I quit crying over my lost hours of labor, he said: "Now the sealer will stick." It did.

You can get Southern Polyurethanes paint for less than $600.

Did you know the damage was already there? Or did you find it after you took the paint off? When I get mine painted, I hope I don't find any hidden damage. The PO said it never been wrecked, so I hope it hasn't as the Carfax is clean, but that doesn't tell you everything.

And what paint are you using? Especially the sealer/primer? I've heard good things of Southern Polyurthanes. They recommend to use Epoxy as the sealer/primer as it is supposed to stick well to the SMC and urethane bumpers without shrinkage and cracking. Then you could do HB primer, or go straight to the color and clear.

Painter got all his material from Sherwin-Williams. I didn't question his selection since he was standing behind his work. Still looks good except where I ran into a parking devider and where I closed the garage door on the rear. DOH.

^^I got a quote from Sherwin-Williams for a bit less than $200 for everything needed to repaint mine.

I've held up due to the fact that they stated I needed a $300 gun to spray it. That part sorta held up the process. But all paint products were what I quoted.

I have "no" quality spray gun.....$50 nor $300...LOL

Plus, my compressor is too small......So Compressor, Gun, paint, elbow grease......that job got put off for a while.

So here is how it will cost you easily over 600! and most likely 4x more.

I sanded mine with the promise of a $500.00 spray....

Paint, paper, towels, wax and greese remover, primer, sealer, paint, clear and a host of activators over $900.00

The moron that said it would be $500.00 charged me $1000.00 (after he had my car)

Car came back with blisters, cracks runs, fish eyes you name it

Another $900.00 in material

paid another "buddy" $500.00 Looked even worse

another $900.00 in material (see a pattern yet)
I am now doing it my self SLOWLY and with a supervised experianced body man coaching me.

my $500.00 paint job cost me 11 months with out my car and $2400.00 PLUS so far and my car is not done!

RUN f you are quoted any thing under 2500! they have no clue what they are doing

I'd run if a body shop told me $7k for a paint job.

I painted mine for about 800 bucks, including the compressor and gun. It was a learning experience for sure. But you can get a good paint job pretty cheap if you are willing to learn and don't really care whether or not if it is show quality. Also be willing to put in the time and effort, as well as suffer through a few mistakes, and how to fix them. TPC Global has good prices on complete paint kits, around 400 bucks. You can get a LVLP gun that works good with smaller compressors. It is not a project for the faint of heart, but it is very possible to have good, if not excellent results.
