thats 600.00 for a local painter to spray the sealer and lay down the color. i,am doing everything else, including three areas that apper to have some damage to the fiberglass, hood, left rear qp, pas door. for my materials i was told to have a 2500.00 budget. almost all of the local shops dont really want anything to do with it. there bread and butter is insurance work and the super highend dudes wont even touch it for less than 7500.00. if anyone wants to follow this i will post pics, products used, and time invested, ect. if so chime in and i will do it. anyways guys wish me luck!! i now this is alot to bite off
hey motodog, Godd luck with the paint job. I am looking at getting the whole front hood assembly along with the front fascia on my 95. I too am thinking of doing the grunt work for a painter to spray and clear coat, if some one will work with me. Will you keep me posted with the progress. My e-mail is bconhill@cebridge.net
Wow, and I'm paying 200 extra just to paint the other half of the hood and buff a scratch out of the door. Car is already in the shop for front end paint, insurance job.
i pay for all materials. i,ve painted 4 cars before and did all the prep. when i was in H.S. i worked with my neibor in the paint shop at villa ford in orange county, ca. i know the prep is gonna be 90% of it, so i will have a pro paint it. i think it will be a really good job when finished.
Go to the paint and body forum and get some advice from Porchdog. Mistakes in the prep can be a disaster later. He'll get you going in the right direction.
I would like to follow this too. I want to know what materials you use. I have painted several cars before and even done some fiberglass on older Vettes but this is my first SMC car and Im not sure what to use on it. I want to add a hood scoop and some fender flares along with some minor fixing on some parts.
I understand this very much, I am in the process of preping my 84. The previous paint job was everything you get warned about, prep, prep, prep and more prep. Because of bad prep paint bubbles and cracks and spider webs all over so now I am taking it down to original primer (black). Even with power sanders and fairly strong arms this is a load of work. I will try to post pictures when I get home. This is very time consuming for one person, but if you have friends you can trust that would help. I went with tons of 600 wet n dry sandpaper. Progress is very slow, especially the hood seems to be taking forever. I will take off the front facias and sand/bead blast to get it down without destroying the plastics underneath the paint. You will see by the pictures I have a ways to go before I even am ready for primer. I will be using an apoxy primer, 2 part.
I wish you the best on yours. You will probably beat me to the 'Finish Line', pun intended.

Yes please tell us exactly what you did and how you did it, along with showing us the end results. A lot of people post up mis-matching information claiming to know what to do about painting our Vettes, I'd like to see one go to completion with the exact techniques used so we can see the real outcome. Very cool!
