Default LCD dash display issues (1990)

Hey guys, wondering if you could help me out with a reoccuring issue I've been having.

My LCD portion of my dash has been acting strange. It works one day, doesn't display anything another day, and sometimes it will flash bars randomly. Also, occasionally, the speedometer will freakout, going from 40mph, to 20, to 150, to not showing anything, all when driving a consistant speed.

Also, it doesn't do it all the time, and I can't pinpoint any specific time I do something that causes it. Hell, sometimes it'll work fine, and I stop to get gas, and when I start the car again, it starts "freaking out" or goes blank.

Any issues as to what it could be? It's getting annoying!

Default LCD display

Had the same problem with my '90. Long story short....
Couldn't figure it out, went through the FSM, no help. Contacted Gordon Killebrew, he told me to check the ignition coil ground/ had I replaced my coil lately? (I had bought a new NAPA part).
Replaced my new coil, problem solved. Hope this helps

There are a couple of tech tips on this that may work for you. do a search for it and see if they cover your problem. I had to get my 93 repaired because it crapped out like yours sounds like it is going to do soon.

Good Luck.

Thanks guys.

I had this problem before and after switching to a MSD cap and coil, so I doubt it's that.

I figured it would probably need rebuilt or replaced. Any idea on cost (of a rebuild or replacement) and how hard it is to get the gauge cluster out (doing it myself)?

Removing and replacing is pretty easy; finding a place to fix it, not so much.

Stay away from Taber's they advertise cluster repairs but there are advisory posts all over the 'net telling us to stay away from them.

You may be better off looking for one on eBay or from one of the salvage places like www.vette2vette.com

I shipped mine off to Southern Electronics. It was $335 I think and I'm happy with the service.

As far as getting it out of the car, it's pretty simple, all you have to do is remove a few screws, remove the two bolts that hold the column up and pull it out. If you have the FSM it's explained very well.
