Default 1985 Rt headlamp motor

Rt headlamp gears were stripped so I replaced them, no problem except it wouldn't rotate completly. After taking it on and off 6 times and taking the motor apart as many times I've got the lamp to close perfectly from the wide open position but the lamp will only open around half way then it needs a little helping hand to open completly. I've cleaned everthing in and out. Sanded the points, armature, commentator (and grooves), brushes and lightly lubed everthing that needed it after cleaning. At this point I'm at a loss why it won't open all the way. Doesn't seem to be binding anywhere.
Any help would be appreciated.

Dont know about your year, but did you change the bushings? Sounds like the bushings to me.

Didn't replace them but did sand them clean. They look to be in good shape.
Thanks

Never had mine apart, so I'm guessing when I say, maybe the limit switch is being tripped early.

Did you run the head lights with the hood open?

My R/H worked perfect with the hood open, but was hitting the coolant recovery tank aluminum pipe, when the hood was closed, and would stop at the mid point.

I take it you ran the headlight by hand..many times, and it was smooth with no binding, no linkage issues?

I got lucky with mine when I found it hitting a pipe.
