If it is the same as my 90 it is a real PITA. Use a small screw driver to pry up the shift button (middle of the ****). Pry it up a little from the front and the back and repeat until it comes off. It is kind of held in by some pressure clips. Just be careful not to tear up the leather on the ****.
Inside you will notice a c-clip in a grove around the shaft. There is a special tool to remove c-clamps. It has two small prongs that fit into the holes and can spread the c-clip. Easy enough. Problem is that GM used some non-stand c-clips and the hole is too small for the standard tool. So you get to use pliers and screw drivers to spread it. Fun, fun fun! NOT. PITA. I ended up breaking mine and put in a new 'standard c-slip so that now it is easy to remove with the standard c-clip tool.
Once you have the clip off it just pulls off.

On my 87, you pry up the plastic insert, look down in the hole and you'll see a "C" clip, Harbor Freight makes a cheap set of tools to remove that clip or you can use long nose pliers or even an ice pick. Make sure you cover the handle with a cloth as you remove the clip otherwise that clip will turn into a "Jesus" clip as in: "Jesus, where did that go?"
These guys are right about removing the button. I've known the clip holding the **** on as a "circlip" or "snap ring" - you might have more luck finding a tool to get at it with those terms. Make sure the pliers you get have a pretty long nose or you won't get them all the way down to the ring.
