Looking at the bottom end of that motor , it looks like it never had a oil change in its 52k miles.
I agree. When you get it running...change the oil. A bunch.
I wrote this thread a couple years ago; http://forums.corvetteforum.com/c6-t...e-read-on.html
..about an 5.3 that hadn't had proper oil changes. WAY worse than yours, but similar apearance. Anyway, my thread was to show how TOUGH these motors are, and what they can tolerate.

Yeah ill say mine looks a little better than that
Thanks for all the compliments guys, and i should be moving along now with the swap. Hopefully i can just find the time
I gotta figure out some things about the harness since there seems to be extra wires that I dont think I need. This week I am off from school so I should get a lot of progress done on the engine
You'll love this convertion when it's finished. I'm finishing my 68 with a LS1/LS2 power plant. I plan on converting my 84 L83 to a LS3 next year. Cash is tight.
Question: was the LS1 for the Vette a 5.3L? and what HP/Tq numbers are you looking for?
Nope... the LS1 in the C5s were 5.7L and I am looking for around 310 Hp and 340 Torque (these are the numbers I found that I will make). It will be a big increase from the 200 Hp and 290 Torque. But I am not doing it for the power. I am doing it mostly to have a reliable Daily driver, but if the power is there than why not
Awesome source of information! What're you going to do about the transmission?
I am working out the transmission stuff now. I am going to try to make the stock 4+3 work but as of now its not looking like it. I was given some bad info to lead me to believe that there would be very little problems to get it to work.
Not to knock your engine swap ( I wish I could do what you're doing), but what was wrong with the L83? We have our share of members on this forum that have a wealth of knowledge about the engine maintainence and how to even make it faster.
If I were you, I'd keep it, clean it up and over the years restore it. Who knows, depending on how long you have this 84 you might want to drop the original engine back into it someday. Just an option. Good luck on this swap.

I completely agree with you. But for me this was the less expensive route. It will be more reliable and this engine is built for boost down the road. My stock engine has about 140xxx miles on it and its on its last leg. As for keeping the L83 u brought up the point that I am going back and forth with. IF i ever sell it I would like to put the crossfire back in but will it take away from the value of the car that much especially with the high mileage. I have seen C3 sell on barret jackson with the LSx motor in it and it still sold for alot of money.
A reason I want to sell it is because I would like money to maybe upgrade the tranny soon. I am just a high school kid and money is very tight for me now. I don't PLAN on ever getting rid of my car and keeping it forever
