Default Oil Fill Cap

Mine leaks. Anyone know where I can get one that screws into the stock valve covers? Or a replacement seal for the one I have?

It should be pretty easy to just make a gasket out of a sheet of gasket maker...

If you get the cap sealed tight the pressure will find somewhere else to vent.

Im also adding a catch can with a breather on it as a temp solution until I can afford to build the new engine.

When you purchase that new oil fill cap, you might as well add a new dipstick also. I just had to ge both for my 91. Oil fill cap seal and the neck of the dipstick had a piece break off and started spitting oil out under continueing high revs.

Thanks for the info. My dipstick starting spewing onto my header at the tack in the spring. I heard it was quite a fire display but no one got pictures. I replaced it then.

The OEM cap on the early L98s (i.e. 84-85) have a gasket/seal on the base of the cap after +/-20 years of heat and chemicals, these get hard and brittle and can deteriorate. If you know what kind of material to look for and you know what you're doing, it's an easy fix. I see that Kubs is referring to a '90 which I'm less familiar with, but I'd expect to find an o-ring seal on the newer caps.

Yes the new ones have an o-ring. If I put RTV around it it doesnt leak, but the cap is kinda beat up anyway.

Yeah the RTV will peel off of there once you unscrew it. I stuck a rubber "o" ring (out of an "o" ring kit) on my '89 cap...no more leak problems.

I thought about doing that too but like I said the cap has seen better days.
