Default engine trouble and QUESTION !!!!

ok well its been a long time since I been on. But I need your guy's help once again..

My 1994 vette has currently 185,000 miles on it. It wont start. Took it to a place down the street and they said its the water pump leaking onto the distributer, and the plugs and wires and worn. So they said $ 1,900 and id have a new water pump, distributer, cap, wires and plugs..

BUT
If I put 2,000 into a car that still has 185,000 miles on it along with a main seal gone so it leaks a little oil, header gasket leak and no heat that doesn't make sense to me specially now !

My IDEA:
Get a newer engine off ebay or find one and swap it out. So If install was 1,500 on an engine and I find one for under 3,000 then for 4,000 id have a newer engine under 75,000 miles and I can drive that car till i die.

WHAT SHOULD I DO? Any help will help me !!

for the problems you have it would be simple to fix most by yourself.

With a new opti spark unit, plugs, wires, and water pump you should be well under a $1,000 for just the parts. Get a hold of a FSM (factory service manual) for your year 'vette if you don't already own one - then jump in and get your hands dirty.

Buying used complete engines from people you don't "know" is a gamble....you don't really know if you got a "good" deal until after you install it and fire it up.

I recommend you have the compression checked on your current engine to see if it additional attention is needed other than parts you already mentioned which need replacing/attention before you make your final decision.

so I have decided to fix it myself to save some moola.

Car does not start. I will crank but not fire.

The guy's said its the water pump and distributer along with plugs and wires. Is a distributer the same thing as a opti spark? and what else could be the cause. I dont want to but the things and then have it be something else ya know?

I know its hard but if anyone has any advice that would help. And thanks for the guys above.

take out the spark plugs, get a good compression tester and do a compression test. The results will either encourage or discourage; but in either case, have courage.

Also IIRC old skool had a post about his no start condition, there is a very good write up in that thread about testing procedures, follow them!

Also LT1*C4 has a very nice post with pictures on how to replace these parts,

First make sure it's really a no-spark issue and not a no-fuel issue. Spray some carb cleaner or starter fluid into the throttle body and crank the car. If it fires up for a few seconds, it's a no-fuel issue. Otherwise hook up a timing light to any spark plug wire and see if the timing light flashes by holding down the trigger while somebody else cranks the engine for you. If no flash, there is no spark.

Opti-Spark is your distributor.

See this for step by step on it's replacement with full color photos of every step:
