The car started idling real rough after about a 20 minute suburban drive that involved the normal spirit. After dealing with the hood cable malfunction I find the # 2 intake RR totally off, and this tear or rip on the lower left portion of the # 4 ex. spring cap:
The number 4 exhaust has a replacement pushrod, as the stock one became irregular, which I noticed by chance just checking the rockers for the heck of it. the stocker is in the background, the 2 piece replacement is in the foreground, black with silver tip:
So get a stock replacement pushrod and just clip the torn piece off the cap? the replacement pushrod is the same length as the stocker. What happened? Any other potential damage from this incident do you think?
I can't really see the rip in the retainer. If you bent a pushrod and now have further problems with the same cylinder, maybe your valvetrain geometry is off or you might have coil bind or your valvetrain adjusment is off or whatever. Do you have self aligning rockers or guideplates?
It doesn't look like your RR's are hitting in the center of the valve stem. Could just be the angle of the photo though. You may need different length push rods. Also, the right spring cap looks bulged or different from the left one. Is that water in your oil?
My guess is you lost the preload on the lifter for what ever reason. My best guess is your rocker stud backed out....but take your pick...not enough preload on the lifter, loose poly lock, loose/bent rocker stud, worn/improper push rod, a lifter issue (which is doubtful) or one of the springs is busted. Looks like just the spring cap was dinged up....no worries with what's showing in the pic. Are those 1.6s or 1.5s on there with stock springs?

They're 1.5 RRs, and the heads are the stock 85s, so no guideplates. Good eye Wev - the one next to it isn't really centered, but the rest are. I guess the stock set up is the exhaust and intake springs having different caps, which is how they were when I took them off, so that is how I put them back on. I'm gonna get a new pushrod, readjust, and see what happens. I'm also going to look at the other side. If geometry is off becasue of the rocker issue (whatever it is or is affecting), geometry could be off there too. Could be my leaving them adjusted to loose.

If it is a flat tappet (non roller) cam, you may have lost a cam lobe or 2. Remove both rockers, and meaure the lobe lift to be sure your cam is good.
