I have been having alot of trouble with my 85's LCD dash panel but the funniest thing is the intermittent tach. Today its raining and my tach came back to life. You reckon this a problem with the panel or something in the sending portion? When I have the time, I am gonna pull the panel and try to fix the rest of the problems but do you think I need a new tach panel as well?
I doubt your tach panel has an issue unless it is cracked, sunburned or suffered a significant impact. I'm guessing your panel back lighting is on the blink (electrical bulb socket connection issues and/or bad bulbs) rather than the tach panel itself.
Easy things to check: Remove the cluster's bezel and then one or both of the 2 heat diffusers (shiny silver covers about the size of a quarter on th face of the cluster) on the right side of the cluster - at this point you should be able to see if the backing lighting bulbs and if they are working or not....if not wiggle the bulbs slightly - if they come light then probably just a poor electrical connection. If the bulbs still are not working - shine a flashlight through these holes and this should provide enough illumination to at least check the LCD panel to see if it is functioning properly. Tach problem could be the Tach Filter. Mine was working sometimes then not working, then it would bounce around, ended up being the tack filter. $40.00 fix..WW
Yeah Engle, the backlighting is out but I can still see the readouts in the daylight. Everything else is working so when I pull it to see about the lights, I wanted to make sure I did everything needed. Batee.com is a great source and it leads me to believe the ground is bad because my turn and hi beam indicators work....well the right turn is intermittent as well but the outside works fine.
WW, the tach filter sounds like its the culprit. Where is it located and who has replacements?
Thanks for the comments guys!
Steve.
And no Jhammond, still havent taken the panel out from the last trip, lol. No procrastination here, uhn uh!
The tach filter on my 89 was bolted to the top bolt on the bell housing but the old filter doesn't have to be removed , just the wires have to be taken off and rehooked to the new tack filter..the top wire plugs into your distributor and the other end goes to the tach. To find the filter just follow the wire from the distributor..Most of your online Corvette parts sites have the filter, Corvette Central, Ecklers etc, price is around $40.00..Not a big job, just close working...WW
