I just bought this 88 a few weeks ago(love the car)and after having it a while I find a lock cylinder tiewrapped under the dash with a key with a chip on it.I never thought much of it and then I noticed that I can't turn the real ignition back to acc. Then a couple of times in the last 3 days the car would not turn over, nothing. My bud says it is probably the security system, waite 10 minits then it would start right up.I went to the vatsucks website and it looks like the fault in the sytem(right now at least)is the starter relay behind the driver info center. What should I do?Replace the relay?Bypass the relay?Install a new lock cylinder?Take out the lock cylinder under the dash?Just not sure what to do.Merry Christmas everyone.
Wow, that's a new one.
Is there a chip in the ignition key you use to crank ?
Removing the lock cylinder at column base and replacing it with a resistor of the correct resistance, might be a good place to start, unless you want the VATS to work normaly.

The key to start the car has no chip...........I am guessing the former owner had a problem with vats.
Maybe he had a problem with the ignition cylinder and replaced it with a non VATS cylinder, then used the old one to bypass VATS.
Either way, it's a mess.
The fact that you may have to wait to get it to crank, does have the sounds of a VATS issue. If you hard wire in a resistor, it will clean up the mess at column base and may cure your intermittent no start.
