Not to highjack this thread, but mine is doing the same thing. The pass side works fine but the drivers side motor runs but the headlight doesn't move............
The fact that you can sometimes make them work while playing with the manual ****, leaves me to believe it's a problem with a limit switch in motor housing. You may be able to do some electrical testing to prove this, or rule it out. http://members.shaw.ca/dankai/Headlight%20Doors.pdf
I had the magnet problem. One was broken in half and loose jamming the motor from spinning. I used super glue to glue the magnet back together and then epoxied it back in place. Replaced the gears while it was apart. Two years and they work fine. Mine is an 87.
