Sup everyone. I am in the process of putting the motor back in my 86 vette and I have a problem. I pulled the motor with the trans and hood still in place (700r4), and after a couple hours of fighting I got the two bolted back together (annoying when trying to do the install in your yard rolling the hoist around on plywood). Anyways, lil bit of prying and the motor with the mounts bolted to it fell right into place. Problem is, I cannot get the bolt holes to line up to save my life. I spent the entire day on wednesday trying combinations of jacking, prying, hammering, etc. and the closest I got is I have one bolt threw one hole, through the mount, but cannot get it lined up to come out the other side, even with all the weight of the motor on the mounts (hoist completely let down, the mount needs to come down like an 1/8th of an inch or so and towards the middle of the car about the same amount. The other side is much worse. Im wondering if the cheap replacement motor mounts could be the problem (bought the two from a company off ebay for like 45 bucks for both). Im assuming it doesnt matter which side I install which on? I might try to see if my stock mounts will work, but I hate putting 105k mile mounts back on the car.
I think I ran into something similar but reusing the stock mounts I had in there.
I do believe I put the mounts in the frame with the bolts in, dropped the motor on top of the mounts, and lined up the bolts for the mounts into the block, and made this the last step..
Could give it a shot.
However if your new mounts are off, this may never work out.
Jack the car up by the crossmember, this would make the stands move a little.Maybe the direction you need.(Jacking by the crossmember will cause frame to sag around control arms spreading engine mounting points out a little) hope this helps.

did the same thing I bolted the mounts in the frame and then bolted the mounts up to the block.
Being off just a wee bit is normal and having to jockey the engine around is all part of the knuckle buster game. Couldn't tell you about the fitment of the new discount mounts you picked up but even using the origional mounts requires some manipulation to get the engine lined up. Just hang in there and think of all the fun it will be when you have it all done.
the thing is, when I did this the first time a few years ago actually getting the mounts down into the brackets on the frame was the hard part. I remember having to fight with a little bit but nothing like this. That was with the stock mounts. Ill mess with it some today and see were I get

Okay, yesterday before school (stupid night classes.....) I got the motor bolted in. Got so pissed trying to get it in because the holes wouldnt line up. Eventually was like EFF it and decided to try the old mounts that came on the car. About 10 mins later motor was bolted in the car. Freaking mounts lined up PERFECTLY. Go figure. The half price chinese ebay **** fails again.
Word of warning to anyone looking for motor mounts, dont be the cheap ones off of ebay that cost 40-50 bucks for both. If it seems too good to be true.. then... well yeah.
