OK, I must have taken my stupid pills today. I finally realized that I could bolt a new pointer on with 2 of the cover bolts. I was thinking it was supposed to be tack welded on the cover. I think I may be been thinking of my Dad's Oldsmobile. Sorry to clog up the forum with a bad thread.
your car is late enough to have the run of the mill tab from an auto parts store.
Just the early ones would be off.
On my 57, i went and bought a new harmonic balancer.........did the timing thing 4 or 5 times.
In the process of finding out what went wrong, i came across a blurb in Car Craft magazine that indicated Chevy relocated the timing tabs and timing marks on "newer" engines.
I removed the new balancer, compared to the old one for a look see, and sure enough, they moved the mark.
I used a chisel to mark the old timing mark, painted it with white-out, and that fixed the problem............Just a word to the wise.
Course now that I have a later engine in it, it's not a problem. But I bet there's a bunch of "old" harmonic balancers out there.......
