Sounds like spending a $100 bucks at a good repair shop will be your cheapest way out. They will diagnose the problem with proper tools and then you can decide if you want to fix or pay them. Guessing gets real expensive.

Buy or borrow a scan tool. I got one off ebay for OBDI only for 75 bucks along with 100 for a FSM best money I ever spent. You check codes and check for readings that do not make sense as well. they can be wrong but not out of bounds and throw a code. You made mention it runs better cold that would have me looking at temperture sensors, O2 sensor plus coil and ignition module.
