I have a 1995 coupe with power windows. The passenger side window will not go up or down with either the driver or passenger door switch. I hear the motor run and a grinding sound like a stripped gear. What do I need to repair this window, regulator, new motor, or can I know until it is disassembled? Is this a difficult repair as I have limited mechanical abilities? Any step by step instructions available? Thanks.
Well I have an 84 vette & I had the same problem, In my case the window ribbon broke, E-z fix...
In your case I think you window regs are little different from mine, but basicly the same..
All you need to do is get yourself a repair manual from any auto parts store... It is not that hard of a job to do & not to mention the $$$ you will save doing it yourself...
Your car does not have a ribbon like the 84 in the previous post. I was into this in 04 and so I will try to remember as much as I can (I think I would rather replace an opti). It is a basic regulator with a motor and meshing gears. The job is not easy as there is much work involved. Getting the door panel off is do-able, some work, not that bad. Getting in to the door and getting the other parts out can really be a difficult job for several reasons.
The big rivets that hold the assembly together have to be drilled out. If you don’t have the “big” rivet gun, than you need to use nut and bolt (low profile) for assembly. In order to get the motor out the window has to be lowered and if not working presents another problem. But you won’t know which set of gears are stripped or the motor is loose till you get in there.
Then you would be lucky if the motor is defective. If the regulator is defective and it has to come out, that is another higher level of difficulty. Window alignment and more.
This could turn out not to be a job for the light hearted. But no matter what is wrong is not a cake walk in any direction.
The gear-driven window lift assembly is the only one available from GM now, and it services all C4s. The FSM is a help for finding some of the hidden screws, etc. If the window is stuck in the full up position, removing the window from the lift assy is pretty tough - be prepared for minimal hand clearance (and some minor bleeding). The most time-consuming part is reattaching and aligning the window to the lift. You might as well replace the door-window seals while the door is apart.

I had to remove the motor from the gear housing to get the window down so I could get the regulator out. Minor bleeding is an understatement

I think I will visit the local dealership for this repair. I don't think I'm up to the task. Thanks everyone.
