Default Rear Transverse spring setup/ 86

I put my rear suspension back together after doing u-joints and wheel bearing and I am wondering if there is a factory spec for the bolt that holds the transverse spring. I know they make longer bolts to lower the car. The nut on mine was up a good 2 inches from the bottom end of the bolt. Should I lower the nut so that it's almost at the end of the bolt. I am thinking I will take measurements from the frame to the ground so I can get both sides even and then keep a slight rake towards the front of the car. I also see a castle nut and cotter pin in some pics. I just have a regular nut, no cotter pin. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks for all the help you guys have given me throughout this project.-E

The factory bolts had a castle nut and cotter pin.
How long are your bolts and what style of nut is being used ??

Here is a photo of an OEM setup. What most guys do is count the number of threads showing on the bolt prior to disassembly. This way they can reinstall it in the same position (height). Check out the number of threads on the other side and try to match both sides. Then measure from spring to ground on both sides to assure that the ride height is the same on both sides.

The bolt is 10.5 inches long and the nut is a nylon lock nut. The nut was about 12 threads up on the bolt when I took it off. The bushings look new so the po must have changed from original. I have had the car for a year and a half.

The nut was 12 threads up when I took it off. What I am curious about is the nut is a nylon lock nut, not a castle nut with a cotter pin. The bushings are fairly new polyurethane so I am thinking maybe this is a replacement for lowering the back but if it is why would the nut be up so high. The bolt is about 10.5 inches long. Does anyone know how long the stock bolt is. I think I can manage to adjust to a good height, I am worried about the lack of a cotter pin, although it doesn't seem like the nut could back off with the spring tension on it. Please advise. Thanks

The stock bolt is around 9", the PO must have switched to longer bolts.
The nyloc should be fine, adjust to your happy zone.

If you are really worried about it, replace the aftermarket bolt with an OEM bolt which will accomodate the proper castle nut and cotter pin. New bolts and nuts can't be very expensive.
