Yep...my '91 vert does the same stuff. My tach will read 1500 rpms, when scanner shows 750 rpms, but the tach will rev in accordance with engine. My water and oil temps seem low too..hovers just over the 100 starting point.
I was told about possible loose connection too...I'm interested in the resistor fix.

Edit...Anyone out in the NW Indiana area who wants to help me replace/do this fix?
I'm just a little nervous doing this myself.

yes,,thats exactly what mine is doing,i replaced the water temp sender switch for nothing,it still reads too cold when its hot,,do we think all this trouble could be the filter on top the engine?and not the cluster???????????

Ive done some extensive searching on the forum, seems a lot of the 90-91 cars have faulty clusters or clusters that dont last long. people have replaced the tach filter on these cars and the problem still exists... from what I gather its quite difficult to replace the tach filter too.
seems the tach filter helps more so on 89 and earlier cars.

90 and up use different tach filters to 89 and earlier cars i believe

Another way to test the water temp and oil temp is to disconnect the sensors and jumper the two wires together and the guages should read to the full value. My water temp did, but my oil only moved a tiny bit, so seems like the resistor inside the cluster.

i grounded the wire on the temp sensor and it pegged the meter in the cluster,,so clusters ok on that,,i noticed ,,,with no key in the neddle on the tack sits below o when i insert the key and turn it to accessory its on o but when i start it its on almost 3000 rpm on idle ,,,

your parts are on the way. You will get the circuit board, the speedo glass and parts, all the gauge solenoids. Should have it in a few days.

Ah so this is my problem I think. My rpms seem to read high 1200 and then move down to 900 closed loop yet it appears to be idling quite fine. I wish I could use my ob2 scanner on this is there a way for me to adapt my ob2 scanner to this car. What test can I run to check my rpms on the tach. Everything else seems to be ok hmm
