Default D36 gears

Ok i have a 93 auto vett and im switching from 2:59 gears to a 3:54... i am already in the process and have the rear end off the car..someone told me that if you have a auto that you need to do a D44 swap? just because its stronger and that the D36 will not hold up...i run on the strip a lot and the last thing i would want is to have to replace a rear end...does anyone else run gears this low on a D36? if so have you ran into any problems?

I have the 3.54 gear in my 94 auto D36 now for over 6 years. As long as you run street tires at the track, I think you will be fine. These gears really woke the car up!

Jacob,
A Dana 36 with 3.54 gears in an auto should be fine behind a fairly stock 275-300RWHP application even with DRs provided the gear is set up right and you don't try to run too much stall in the convertor. High stall speeds >3000 can have the same effect as higher horsepower engines at launch putting more strain on the rear. 60' times in the 1.7 to 1.8 should be a safe range. It's when you start seeing 1.6x and lower 60' times that you will start pushing the max limits of the D36.You should also make sure you have an maintain a good clutch pack in the gears if you drag race alot.Worn clutches can cause increased wear on spider/side gears causing breakage problems as well.If you plan for more power later though as most all of us usually do and it's in the budget, the D44 would obviously be the better way to go.
I did manage to run a 3.54/D36 behind a 383/375RWHP set up w/2600 stall and Drs for 3 years without issue before switching to a D44/3.73. 60' times were in the 1.65 range and that's with about 120 passes from counting time slips.
