being a non-pro , how bad is it replacing a window regulator ribbon in a 85 vet.? Instructions seem confusing and limited. Wont these just break in a couple of yrs?
Instead of throwing in another crappy pair of ribbon style regulators, upgrading to the fast scissor style regulator is something you might want to consider.
Took me about an hour and a half, worst part is drilling out the rivets if you don't have a drill press. Other then that it's not bad and for 5 bucks it's a hell of a lot cheaper then upgrading.
I just upgraded mine to the scissor style and its AMAZING compared to the ribbon style! I got it done at a corvette specialty shop near my home for about $300 with a used lift. Works like a champ.
Replaced mine with the upgraded scissor type and wouldnt put ribbons back on anything.
I have a ribbon regulator passenger side and a scissor regulater drivers side I will sell if your interested in used both worked I just bought new interior door panels and decided to replace the 25 year old stuff while I had the panels off 100.00 + shipping. If you want new ones this is where I got mine. http://www.corvetterecycling.com/ great products at a great price.

i had to have someone help me take the window out but other than that its pretty straight forward. Autozone actually sells a ribbon in their help section, it is basically the same, you just have to cut it to length. Make sure you grease it up good before installing.
I agree, drilling out the rivets is the worst. I have had to do both windows at seperate times (about a year apart) I just did the ribbon but I have the siscor upgrade that i will do after i finish the paint job.
since no one has actually answer the original Question (3 months later)......
Putting in the Scissors over the Ribbon is about a 2 on a scale of 1-10.
Each door will take about an hour to do. take the door panel off then remove that plastic and set it aside.. basically you just loosen three fasteners that hold the window in place, take the old regulator out.....the replacement kits come with a template that shows you where to drill two holes in the bottom of you door.
Go slow drilling the holes, it is SMC and any old dull drill bit will cut right through it. More dust than anything.
Now you ready to insert the new regulator. Just put it in and include the two lower mounts that weren't there before.
replace the glass and adjust......use commons sense
The only rivets are for the outside rubber....folks often replace that outer seal when they have the glass out...but it is not mandatory.
The template gives you the choice to make slotted holes.....you'll need them unless you hit the sweet spot on the first drill.
Not hard. I just did my drivers side. Do not use the old type. I just bought a pair of the newer style for my 85. I found out someone already did the one in the passenger door, so I have an extra for that side. I suspected it was b/c it went up super fast, and the drivers side was super slow. I bought used from a forum member. PM me if interested.
Somehow it fixed my loose, out of adjustment window too.
