Default Weatherstrip Installed

Hi, I just installed a new peice of weahterstrip from WIllcox for my 85. It was really easy like everyone said and I did not use glue. The thing that puzzles me is the fact that the weatherstrip isnt all the way into the corners like the old piece was. All it really does is get to the edge of the hatch glass. Is this normal?

Thanks

Its kinda hard to get a good picture in the sunlight. Anyways, you can see the edge of the body and the weatherstrip doesnt even come out past the edge of the hatch glass. The old piece went right to the body. Granted, the plastic rim came undone all the way around so maybe the old one was placed incorrectly.

Generally, vendors dont keep W/stripping in stock. When you buy it, its sent from the manufacture or dealer to you. If you think its incorrect, most vendors will replace it for you. Alot of this new weatherstripping being made now, is no doubt China. I have recieved some poor weatherstripping, and I called the vendor, ( who is a forum sponser)
exchanged it for me. They were real cool and easy to deal with.

I hear even GM's weatherstripping is made in China. I sure wish it was priced like other china weatherstripping.

It tears over time. Had one split in two days.

Has anyone replaced theirs with a GM? and how did it fit? The ones I tried had the miters cut wrong. ( from India) They didn't cut both angles thus it will not go into the corner stressing the seam, Soon the stress causes the seal to tear open.

I just replaced my A & B weather stripping it is latex from Lonestar . It went on great the fit is perfect. Everything seals up great. I made my own tools to clean out the retainers, left them on the car to clean them. no need to reseal them down. " NO GLUE " I am a retired union comercial carpenter have applied weather stripping to various things in my days, after much inspection there is no need for glue if the product is quality and the fit is good. Part of the degrading over time is because of the glue. It can not move so it fails over time.

Was it a seal for the hatch? If so did it fit into the corners at the cowl all the way in? If yes again can you can tell my how to find Lonestar? I am interested.

This is what it looks like when installed. The miters are cut wrong and it is too short to reach the outter corner.

This after filling a 1 inch gap because the miter was cut wrong. I did color this so it is not as noticeable but it still looks like s__t.

kenmohr - mine looks just like yours. I was thinking about breaking it apart and re-gluing it like you did. Any leaks with the re-glue?

No they are the ones between the windshield and the roof and the the one that runs along the back of the roof and down the two window sides. Lonestar can be found on Ebay or just do a search

I haven't had a leak. I don't drive it a lot in the rain. Only when I get caught. I'm waiting for someone to make one correctly and then I'll replace it. I have had three new and all were the same. The last one was longer but they didn't correct the miters.

Im gonna hose test it for leaks and if it is sealed properly Ill leave it for now even though it looks terrible . Then maybe down the road if another company makes one that fits exactly Ill upgrade.

I also greased those corners with a light coat of dielectric grease so the hatch glass wouldn't pull on the w/s. Some guys use talcum powder. Don't know how well that works or stands up under a rain storm.

My hatch WS shrank over time. It had pulled back at least 3" out of one corner. I tacked the corners back with adhesive, leaving the rest loose until it dried. I then stretched and glued the rest in place and shut the hatch. So far so good.

All of my weatherstrips needed gluing in place after they have shrunk. Dunno what brand they were.

I got one of those hatch weatherstripping from Willcox. And it measured short.

The interesting thing is Willcox advertises they measure all their pieces before they ship it out. Yet, the hatch weatherstripping arrived in a sealed plastic bag. And I had gotten some Targa Top weatherstripping from them as well. And one was over an inch short.

They replaced the Targa Top pieces. But never responded back on the hatch weatherstripping, so I just went ahead and put it on.

Did the hatch seal properly or does it leak?
