Default What is this on the engine? Doesn't belong?

I just got this car recently and it's obviously had a hard life. I found this thing on the engine and I don't really think it belongs. I've search the manuals and I can't find it.

This in on the driver's side just below the plenum near the throttle body. It was tucked in there a bit. I pulled it out and found it has 2 small vacuum ports (1 was connected to the EGR and the other to a port coming out the side under the front driver's side of the plenum. On the opposite side of this gadget is a medium sized vacuum port that wasn't connected. I could not find a vacuum line laying anywhere. On the side of the gadget is a 2 wire connector. It was sort of plugged in. I say sort of because the connector won't plug in (it doesn't mate up). Any ideas out there? Below is a pic of how I found it.

Here it is out. You can see the electrical connector doesn't look like it belongs.

There's a mounting tab but I don't see anywhere it's supposed to be.

Here's a side shot.

Another side shot.

Any ideas? Please help. I can't find any pics of engines with this in there.

Looks like the EGR control solenoid.

I think it is the EGR solenoid and should be located on the passengers side at the rear of the block.

There may be a difference between my 86 and your 86 in the size and shape of the solenoid. Check the passenger side back by the distributor and see if you find this unit.

The solenoid is usually mounted to thermostat housing and supply vacuum comes from a nipple on bottom of throttle body (drivers side).

Sounds like someone forgot to put it back in last time the runners were off and stuffed it in there to avoid the hassle.

I wonder if this is a replacement for the OEM part that is no longer made

Default Look what I found...

Picture is from Autozone.....86 Corvette EGR solenoid. Looks pretty close to what you have.

See one of these around? Agent86 usually knows his stuff....there are differences between my 85 and your 86....is if he said check the thermostat housing...start there.

Are you sure it can't be purchased? It was on the Autozone web site 30 minutes ago.

I was thinking it might be the solinoid for the egr but wasn't sure, especially since it is in the wrong place. Can anyone tell me where the vacuum lines go? Right now the two small ones go to the egr and port under the throttle body driver's side. But there is a larger one not hooked to anything.

I have looked but cannot find, even in the manual, a vacuum line schematic. Does anyone have one? I do have the factory manual on pdf but I can't find it there either.

From what I understand when you go to order one they state no stock and no order date
I would buy one just to have if I could. There are a few past threads about this part also.

This one is from back in 08

You may have a very early '86 because the location you found it is where they are located on an '85.

Should I just plug off the third vacuum port?

I think that just the two lines next to each other are used. I think you can leave the other one free.

Plug the line going to manifold. If you want to replace vac. switch you can probably use a switch from almost any car from junk yard. Just find GM of close year.
