Dusted off some old spreadsheets

Here is something to look at
The two RED lines are the “Rear Wheel” horsepower required, both aerodynamic and rolling resistance (using a speed based friction coefficient)
For both CD’s (0.37 from the wind tunnel test) and (0.34 from GM folklore), real world could be any place in the yellow zone
I laid in a typical horsepower curve that peaks at 480 HP, and used the ZF6 gears and a 3.07 rear axle

Check points might be
A stock L98 – 245 FWHP = 200 RWHP = 150 – 155 mph (from graph)
ZR1 – 375 – 405 FWHP = maybe 320 RWHP = 177 – 182 mph (from graph)
Seams about right?

Looks to me like 3.07 would be just about right for 480 RWHP and an attempt at 200 MPH, 3.45’s would rev out at a little under 190 MPH.

This is top speed with unlimited distance
200 mph in a mile is a totally different problem

I think you will have it easy with that setup!
I showed this video before but for those who have yet to see it, here is a Atomic Orange Z06 with cam, headers, and porting done to it. It got to 200mph pretty effortlessly! (warning, there is a little cursing due to excitement)

By the way, how do you expect to go over 170mph with 168mph rated tires???

Strip everything out of the car and dump one of those 572 motors in there. Good luck, have fun.

My data logs record high speed runs at around 5-10mph lower than what the tell tell on the gps recorded (however speedo indicates within 1 mph at 80 mph......)

Personally I'm going the easy route on my 87.

500rwhp with 2.59s,built 4l65E, and progressive shot should give me more than enough to pummel 200 mph. Granted I'm staying auto with the trans programmed to upshift at wot. But it's been done a few times, C4's in the 200's that is.
Is that a FRAM filter i see??? You can get hung for using one of those

Considering that known real world cars and speeds tend to fit in it nicely I'd say it's pretty darn good!
I roughed in the rwhp using the generally accepted 15% driveline loss.

L98 245chp (210rwhp), 150ish

LT-1 300chp (255rwhp), 165ish

LT-4 330chp (280rwhp), 170ish

ZR-1/Callaway We'll just round em off to 400chp (340rwhp), 180ish

Car and Driver C4 603chp (515rwhp), 212mph

ZR-1 Snakeskinner 440chp (375rwhp), 188mph

ZR-12 Conan 580chp (495rwhp), 211mph

It’s much harder calculating acceleration over a fixed distance, acceleration and inertia. require a lot of compromises.
So consider this as a real “ball park” estimate of the RWHP required to reach a given speed in a mile (for a generic C4).

Actually no it takes generally a stroker and someone to spend 10k or more.....But then again, the easier route would be a hair dryer, or maybe two.

I guess I'm getting too old for this stuff. Finish the build, have a blast, don't die.

Since youtube came out, there have been videos of Early Z06 cars doing it with minor or no real mods. IMO with 450hp, and a 6spd or similar gearing set up, you would be there on enough road.

I've been dying to have this dialog. I have assembled the parts to build a sbc engine for a 34 ford open wheel coupe. Subsequently, I acquired my 84'. Now I'm wondering what it would take to target 200 mph in my 84'. The sbc now stands with stock bottom end, dart 180cc heads, comp cam, roller rockers and ide 44 webers. I was shooting for 350 hp. One problem is a 2 bolt block that I've been told will take 400 hp.
