How much power increase is realized with Headers on a basically stock LT1?

Thinking of E.M. or Melrose.

Thanx

I don't really know I just wanted them, when I was 17 I had a 57 chev that I put fender well headers on, its just kind of a nostalgic thing with me. I ordered them from E.M. Sorry if I bored you with this, but so many of my friends thinks its the dumbest thing they have ever heard of. Thanks

Not Boring at all.....When I was 17,probably alot longer ago than your 17, I bought a 64' Impala Sedan 283 with 2 BBL Carb. & a Power Glide Trans.Well, I built a 375 HP 396 and bolted a 4 speed muncie to it and replaced the 283 and Powerglide.Quite an undertaking and yes I did have headers on it and a 780 Holley. My friends thought I was coo coo as well.It was pretty quick for a 3,900 Lb. Car.Used to beat my frineds 69' 390 Mustang Mach 1..Pissed him off supremely.Don't know why I thought of that story.I guess your 57' Chevy did it.

That's a good story sounds like a really cool car but a 64, that would have been a brand new car to me. Just a little more when I bought the 57 it didn't have a motor or tran in it so I bought a 4 speed out of a 68 Chevelle and I bought a 327 / 375hp brand new I put a hi rise manafold and 750 holley. the only reason I'm saying this we both did kind of the same things. I don't know about you but I wish I still had that car but at the time got married and couldn't afford the gas anymore I think it was around .55 cents a gallon.

Dennis,

I'm not to far behind I'll be 60 in September, I just guessed at the price of gas I really don't remember, like a lot of things that have quit working. Be good and enjoyed chating with you........Ron

It could be gain (e.g. feer flowing exhaust) and it could be a loss (e.g. not enough back pressure). It all depends on the package of components you add to achieve a certain performance level and not just one component.

An engine is an air pump. The more you efficiently pump air in / out the higher performance you can achieve.

If your going to spend the money to add headers I'd suggest at least adding a cool air box and 52mm TB ath the same time for not much more $$'s. A performance ignition box wouldn't hurt either. The you can go from there (e.g. 1.6RR's, Cam, Heads, Gears, etc.)

As with any performance component addition it would be good to upgrade the chip or ECU to tune for the upgrades.

I would also consider TPiS headers and Random Technology CAT's / pipes.

Do you have the dyno sheets? How much torque gain? Did you lose any low end torque? Thats pretty good, 15hp!
What is your exhaust setup from the headers?

i do have the dyno sheet somewhere,im in the middle of moving right now so ill have to find them.from the headers i have 2.5 tubing to x-pipe,2.5 tubing to 3"flowmaster super 40s.they should call them drone masters though.before i did my gear change it would hit the sweet spot of its drone potential right at 70mph,any way now its good on the highway and drones at 40.you know how people say your gonna loose torque on the bottom when you run those big primarys, well theyre right.but the pay off happens around 2800 when everything is up.my advice is this.stock primary size is best for people who have tall gears, and dont plan on doing much in the future performance wise.the larger primary size works good for people who have lower gears and know that they are going to be doing head/cam,more cubic inches, and other major motor projects.i did pick 18lb/ft of tq at 4000rpm.

Cool, thanks for the info! Maybe one day I will get some headers (if I ever need new cats, I will just get headers instead).
