Default 1984 Coolant Temp Sensor for ECM - part number???

This is getting to be a PITA.

I replaced the fan switch which is in between # 6 + 8 cylinders.

On the OTHER side (drivers), there is a coolant temp sensor that provides data to something.

Anybody know that part number???

It is a one wire connector.

And then there is a sensor in the front of the engine too.

All the local parts places keep showing me two wire connectors but evrything coming off has one connector???

HELP

Thanks.

Might have just figured this out thanks to Ecklers:

for the dash readout: http://www.ecklers.com/product.asp?p...6&dept_id=1127

for the ECM: http://www.ecklers.com/product.asp?p...5&dept_id=1127

So there are actually THREE temperature sensors:

1) to kick on the cooling fan

2) for the dash

3) for the ECM.

'84 owners - does that sound right???

Thanks

The one thats in the front of the intake is the coolant senser for the ecm. The original style (looks like a knock senser connector) is troublesome, you can upgrade to the newer senser & connector.

HOW can you tell if it is not communicating with the ECM???

What would the symptoms be???

In any case, it is getting replaced.

Thanks.

It would run extremely rich as the engine warms up, may even stall. To really know if it's communicating w/ the ecm you'll need to have it scanned, look at the live data. You can do an ohm test on it, the resistance changes w/ temperature. Google GM coolant temp. senser resistance, you'll find a chart.

ex-x-fire:

Thanks for the tips.

But I cannot for the life of me find this little bugger???

Maybe the "housing" has it disguised.

Gonna try again to find it this morning as I replace the EGR.

It may have a cover on it, I think the color is white. It should be between the a/c compressor & air pump, is screws in horizontal.

Wholly buckwheat - I think I found it - looks like the cover is beige.

I can't reach it easily.

Looks like the best way to get at it is to remove the two bolts from the elbow on the air pump, loosen up a couple other hose clamps and then move that BIG A$$ cluster of vacuum stuff (what is all that???) out of the way.

Before I go there, putting in two new IAC's next week to see if that helps my idle.

Thanks again exxx.

Also trying to find the ECM coolant sensor, not sure if i've found it or not. Anyone know if the colors on the wires are yellow and black?

The coolant temp sensor screws into the front of the intake, horizontal. It might have a cover on it. Its above the waterpump, between the a/c & air pump. Its best if you up grade to a newer style sensor w/ the newer connector.

Dave, I have a new ACDelco 213-52 CTS sensor with a new ACDelco PT1345 new style connector for $30 plus shipping. I have an 84 also but went to carb so I have some brand new sensors I had as spares so let me know what you need as I no longer need them. You can email me at docwilcar@yahoo.com Greg

There are 3 coolant sensors. One on either side of block. One is for fan switch, and the other is the temp gauge. Third is the one in front, that tells the ECM how to adjust the fuel mixture. h
