Default camshaft choice

Ready for a cam change. This is what I have 86 w/1.6 rockers true dual exaust with out cats.Bosh 3 injectors. egr delete.307 diff. I realy want to keep the stock Intake an manfolds[I like the stock look] My choices I have been looking at are comp cams 12-314-4. 260 duration 444 lift. Or tpis torque secrets 276/286 duration 454 lift. there is no point in going above 5000 rpm. Also would like to keep a decent idle. Any body out there in the same boat as me.Keep in mind this is a flat tappet camshaft.

Either is fine but you should still port the hell out of the stock intake manifolds, and you will need to budget for a custom chip reprogramming.

I think the TPiS cam is a slightly better choice for your set up. The only thing I would add is make sure your valve springs will handle the lift.

You could go with a bigger base and runners and port your plenum to match. It would still look stock. You have to pull the manifold anyway. Then you could go with a bigger cam. If you're going to the trouble to change the cam, why not make real HP? Trust me, you won't regret it

Hi.
I have an 85 4+3 z-51. I did some mods not being a tuner or knowing V-8s. I have the TPIS cam toque secrets with the specs indicated. The car works great but have the impression the engine is a bit overcammed.I would have lked some comments on that. I have 1.5 rockers. I ported the manifold, and heds and plenum to large tube runners from TPIS. I had Formato do the chip. I have the TPIS headers and a very nice stainless catcak from Ferrita Sweden. I descreened the MAF.
The engine pulls very nicely up to 5000 ( do not want to stretch it longer as I do not know the spring specs). I am going to dyno it this summer. What I know is that I follow a 1998 C5 roadster without problems.
I changed the cam before I had the deaders on and the engine sort of opened up when getting headers. Think that makes some 15-20 hp.

IMO, I don't see anything (problem) that you've described that begs comment. Oh yeah,,,you didn't say anything is wrong!

I doubt it's overcammed.

TPIS cam may be a touch too big with stock runners/base. With ported base and big runners, its not so bad. Slightly large since it would probably peak higher than 5200 rpm with a short runner intake, and TPI usually is done by 4800-5000. I like the duration split for stock heads tho.

This is the cam in my 355.

I have a Super Ram, but I know others have used it with the stock TPI. Idles well and is the RPM range I planned to work with. I ran it with the stock ECM programming for a year, before getting some tuning.
